Hi fellow CC's. I just got accepted to UT Austin (science college). I was wondering how good of a college that is for a premed student. I know UT is a top notch school but i mostly hear about their business, engineering, and graduate school. I never hear about there science department. Would i get a complete education with good grades to get into a good medical school. I know the grades are dependent on the student but i was wondering on how hard it is to maintain a good grade there. The main reason i questioni UT Austin is because i dont want to go to school in austin if University of Houston is going to be a similiar expereince academic wise. It would be easier to go to school in houston because thats where i live. Can someone who has knowledge elaborate on these questions?

I don't recall if you can declare pre-med straight away - you'll probably have to declare a typical major first. I hear their Biology, Biochem, and Ecology isn't too bad, though other science areas like Physics and Mathematics are lacking.

You are comparing apples to oranges. UT is a tier 1 school, U of H is a tier 3 school. I strongly suspect that medical schools would give preference to graduates of a tier 1 school, even if the grades were the same.
Did you consider the natural science honors program at UT? That might be your best bet.

that is a good point. but some may disagree and say higher grades are easier to achieve at uh then ut. and some med schools perfer higher grades regardless of school. does any body else have any more comments? P.s (yeah i am really considering their honors in natural science)

Trying to keep a high GPA for med school admissions? Based on the grade distribution for most professors, it is relatively difficult to get A's in the two required American History classes and the two required U.S. Gov't classes. Come in with AP credit for US History and Gov (so you only need one gov class) or use pick a prof wisely or take the classes at community college over the summer.

I would say that for a school as broad-ranged as UT, I'd say that a degree in anything would be great, especially in their honors program. I don't know very much about U of H, but I do know a lot of people at my school, very intelligent people who wish to do pre-med, attend the University of Texas at Dallas which is supposed to have a stellar pre-med program. I would look into UTD and see what the buzz is about.

Would ut dallas have the same perstige? i was really only concidering ut austin

I didn't think that UTD had the same prestige as UT, but form what I've heard from reliable sources, it's becoming a great school in itself, enough to be in consideration to become its own flagship school. Of the Texas schools, UTD is supposed to be focused on the pre-med people (from what I've heard), and UT is supposed to be mostly for business and engineering types. (And Plan II like me)

like i figured ut gave me a small financial aid package. I am wondering how many people on this forum are in college of natural science? if you guys are can you tell me the key reasons why one would attend? p.s i am not trying to down that college just wanted to know more insight.

what GPA did you transfer in with? i go to a community college and i was just wondering because i want to go to UT next fall.

You should apply to Dean's Scholars, not only do you take honors courses and are guaranteed research your freshman year but its very social and a great place to meet people.

well my gpa on the community college transcript is a 3.47. Unfortunately they also count dropped classes grade so it was a 3.27. That is the main reason i am concerened because that is a low gpa. by the way topawala are you desi? if you dont know what that is then nvm? and stilgar i wil look into that. i am classified as a sophomore though.

oh ok i am trying to get into UT next fall with a GPA of 3.5 hopefully. and ya i am desi. lol thats funny you figured it out. lol where are you from?

like i suspected topawala gave it away hahah. we should keep in touch because i am planning on going to ut upcoming fall to. and like i stated my gpa is about the same as yours 3.5. I am from houston by the way and you?

ya i am trying to get into the business school but i have no chance externally with a 3.5 GPA. so i am gonna try to get in internally once im at UT. and i live in temple. its like 60 miles north of austin.

Well, to directly answer the question of the title of the thread, I'd assume UT-Austin has an outstanding science department but I am basing this off the US News graduate school ranking. I believe for Comp Sci, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics they are all within the Top 20.

if graduate ranking is that high does that also mean undergrad is just as good? is anyone on this forums a undergrad at ut natural sceince?

I'm in UT Natural Science as an undergrad, in the Math department specifically. I can't tell you much though. I'm in my first semester at UT and I've only had one class in the department, which was a Calculus course. I love that professor though. He is a great teacher and really knows his stuff. He earned his PhD from Yale. It is a large lecture class, but if you can't handle large lectures for lower division courses then maybe UT isn't a fit.

The rankings are relatively high for the graduate level rankings. I don't know how much that reflects the undergrad quality. Still, I thought I'd share the specific rankings from the 2009 edition of the US News rankings.

Biological Sciences #23
Chemistry # 12
Computer Science #9
Earth Sciences #9
Mathematics #14
Physics #16
