How good is NYU Tandon?

What are the employment outcomes in NYC for NYU Tandon graduates?

Not good. Only reason people go there is because of the NYU name. Before the school merged with NYU no one even knew about it.

@BuckerPuper could you say more specifically why Tandon is so bad? I’ve now seen multiple people say something pretty negative about it without really explaining why. I applied ED to Tisch and am just curious.

I’m not really that familiar with it but I know that NYU Tandon was the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering. It was at the time only affiliated with NYU but not a part of NYU. Also, it was a very mediocre engineering school. When it merged with NYU (actually became a part of the school), nothing changed, except for the fact that it is actually a part of NYU. It saw a major increase in applicants. This turn of events suggests that it is still the same mediocre school but is now seen as “better” just because it is a part of NYU and the NYU name and prestige.

Historical names:

Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn → (acquires New York University College of Engineering in 1973)
Polytechnic Institute of New York → (renamed in 1985)
Polytechnic University → (begins merger process with New York University in 2008)
Polytechnic Institute of New York University → (completes merger process in 2014)
New York University Polytechnic School of Engineering → (large donation from someone named Tandon in 2015)
New York University Tandon School of Engineering

thanks @ucbalumnus

The school is rated by US News in the top 50 undergraduate engineering programs in the US, it’s tied with RPI. Obviously, USN ranking isn’t everything but since their methodology includes student outcomes, faculty resources and expert opinion I think it’s probably inaccurate to say that Tandon’s popularity is due simply to the NYU name. Also, I’m not sure NY Polytechnic was as mediocre as the previous poster seems to think. @BuckerPuper I’m curious about whether there is any factual basis for your comments? Do you know anything about how well “Polytechnic” educated undergraduate engineers from 1973-2014? Their wikipedia page lists a number of accomplished scientists as alumni.

top 50 is pretty mediocre IMO @CaMom13 but not trying to offend anyone

No offense @BuckerPuper - to each their own. I am sorry you feel that way as I notice from another post that you’re applying to schools barely in the top 50 National Universities as well as ones that didn’t even make the top 50. I also notice you are applying in finance and not in engineering. I certainly hope you don’t feel your eventual acceptances are to “mediocre” programs as they all seem to be good solid schools from my less lofty perspective.

@CaMom13 I’m a pretty mediocre student so I will be going to mediocre schools. OP asked about someone’s opinion and I gave mine.

@BuckerPuper - the problem with comments like yours is that you are offering an opinion about something you admit knowing little (if anything) about. Tandon has wonderful facilities and they are growing every day. Yes, it is separate from the main NYU campus but that is nothing the school tries to hide, nor would it have any reason to. It’s in Brooklyn, to many the coolest part of NYC. Of course you are free to offer your opinion, but I urge you to consider whether your off-the-cuff comments offer anything of value to students looking to make informed decisions. Is Tandon perfect? No, of course not. And, yes, it is undergoing a transition period. But for you to say it is “not good” is absurd and to say that the only reason people go there is the NYU name is even more ridiculous. Comments like this are what gives College Confidential a bad name. For those of you looking for useful information about NYU, I encourage you to check out the NYU group on Reddit. Lots of good information on there and people willing to answer your questions to help you make decisions based on what is right for your particular situation.
