I've been accepted to Cal Poly and Rose Hulman for computer science. Basically, RHIT is a lot more expensive so I'm really wondering if its program beats Cal Poly. I've visited Cal Poly and the campus and area are really nice plus its a lot closer to home. I know that Cal Poly has an excellent engineering program..... so my question is whether or not i should shell out the extra cash to go to RHIT.

I have also been accepted to these colleges as an international students but couldn’t decide at all. RHIT is highly more expensive compared to Cal Poly, but ranks at top. Any ideas? (my major: computer engineering)

we’re facing a similar choice/decision…any advice would be great!

I’m a sophomore at Rose right now. I have a friend who went to Cal Poly over Rose, for cost reasons, and I know it is a very good school. I didn’t look into Cal Poly during my college search so I can’t really compare the two, but in general I would say that both are great schools so you can’t really go wrong with either one.

Have you visited Rose-Hulman as well?

I’m sorry I can’t help much with comparing Rose and Cal Poly, but if you have any questions about Rose in particular I’d be happy to answer them.

Hi
My son is considering a trip to interview at RH. He is very interested in hands on approach-project based learning vs. lecture and test.

He also is a good student but does not test well due to having a bit of an learning difference, so usually uses extra help from proffs, tutors, and extended time on tests. His math SAT was onlly 630 but other scores closer to 680. Currently in all AP calc, eng, hist, chem and computer sci.
and keeping a strong 3.8. Also considering Cal Poly SL and Pomona, and RIT Lafayette or Bucknell. Rose seems like a great fit in terms of size and prof/student ratio. How accessible is help and tutoring? Do you know of any kids their with learning dif’s,
What is there to do recreationally on weekends…
Average homework load per night? amount of testing vs graded projects. Also the grading curves: with so many superstars in Math etc…can make for a crazy curve ?

Thanks for you reply. He would also like to be in AFROTC, ROTC via Indiana State.

Peer based tutoring is availible on a daily basis in the learning center honestly it can be hit or miss. One on one or small group assistance from the instructor of the class is usually availiable at least 1 hour a day to help answer questions. To be honest I have not met anyone with learning difficulties at Rose I am not saying they don’t exist or that there is not help for them but rather that I just dont know. Homework varies from night to night but it seems like when one instructor wants to lay it on then all your instructors want to lay it on. Time spent on homework ranges from 45min/night to 6 hours the mean being about 1.5hours/night for A’s. Rose imo is unique in their project based learning in many technical classes projects make up for 20-50% of the grade. Curve? Most instructors don’t curve. Why would they if your son or daughter is capable of doing the math/physics/engineering that is required to pass the class then they will pass and get the grade they deserve. The tests are very straight forward and old tests are often availible in the learning center. Some profs veiw it as their job to prep you for the tests and some view it as your job either way the tools are availiable and if you keep up on the homework and study for an hour or two the night before then most tests should be no problem. ROTC is a game changer btw it takes up quite a bit of time and is nearly worthless for graduation requirements if your son has a learning diff I might recomend holding off on that until he gets settled.

BTW imo in CS it is hard to say among top quality programs who beats who as the field is changing so quickly. I can say the the Rose CS dept is top notch and if your son/daughter is looking at going into that then they should have no problem finding a job. At the winter career fair at Rose there were more jobs availible for CS/SE majors than Rose had CS/SE majors.
