How good is Stanford pre-Law ?

I know that Stanford offers excellent CS Engineering program.

However, is Stanford pre-Law program good ?
I noticed that only small number of Stanford undergrads enter Yale Law School.

Do you think top east coast law school (Harvard Yale Columbia) discriminate against
west coast schools such as Berkeley & Stanford ?

Yale Law JD programs undergrad represented

Yale College 69
Harvard College 65
Princeton 37
Columbia 36
Brown 22
Amherst 18
UPenn 17
UC Berkeley 16
Stanford 16

No - at least not for well known west coast schools. For smaller/less prestigious schools, discrimination by location occurs on both coasts just because local colleges (or employers) may not recognize the name or associated prestige.

Pre-law isn’t a major at Stanford (or most other schools). Stanford has a pre-law society, the opportunity to take courses at the law school, a pre-law advisor, etc. I can’t compare with other schools, but I found these opportunities to be pretty much what you would expect at a good university.

Computer Science is one of the most popular majors at Stanford. CS majors go into the legal field at a much lower rate than humanities majors. The low numbers of Stanford students at Yale Law are likely reflective of fewer students applyling to law school from Stanford. You’d be better off comparing acceptance rates than numbers - I suspect these would be comparable to Harvard’s (assuming GPA/LSAT scores are similar).

I have noticed that all supreme court justices studied at Harvard/Yale Law school including the newest one. Do you think most Stanford Law graduate’s future careers are limited within Silicon Valley area ? How is the career prospect outside of Slicon Valley.

Off the top of my head, O’Connor and Rehnquist both studied at Stanford and did pretty well outside of Silicon Valley. Fun fact, they were in the same class. Warren Christopher also did well outside of Silicon Valley

But if you are targeting to be a Supreme Court Justice you should go to Harvard or Yale. Otherwise, you will get a lot out of Stanford.

@JamesVanc you are forgetting the fact that not as many Stanford grads choose to go into law as Harvard, Princeton grads. The ones that do are extremely successful. No east coast schools do not discriminate, definitely not against Stanford.

Stanford law graduates are definitely not limited within Silicon valley, they are highly sought after everywhere. Stanford is considered amongst the top 3 law schools along with Harvard and Yale, it wouldn’t make sense if it had only a regional appeal.
About 25% of graduates of the class of 2016 stayed in the Bay area, the rest left for other major cities.

@JamesVanc

There is no such major as “pre law” much like there is no such major as “pre med.”

Yale is considered the top law school, but a gap over Stanford and Harvard which trade places. Stanford’s ascension into the top law schools is fairly recent.

Yale is less a practicing law school than one where students tend to go into politics, academia or clerkships/judgeships.

Harvard Law is just multiples bigger than Yale or Stanford and hence absolute number comparisons are highly distorted.

Stanford Law School grads can go anywhere; it’s only their preferences that keep them west. (If you want to do corporate law head to NYC; if you prefer to work with start ups and ultimately go in-house then stay out West).

^ “Stanford’s ascension into the top law schools is fairly recent.”

Stanford’s been a top-5 law school (arguably top 3) for over 50 years, if that’s what you mean by “fairly recent”.

^ I agree. Stanford law has been practically top 3 for many many decades. Its ascension is anything but recent. Maybe it used to be that it was a clear third, after Yale and Harvard whereas in recent times it established itself as a full equal of these two.

The first law school ranking in 1975 had Stanford tied for 7-15th.

It was 4th in 1991 by USNWR, but then finally stayed a constant 2/3.

Don’t get me wrong, I think its a much better law school to attend than Harvard or any other with the possible exception of Yale.

IWe are focusing on Stanford pre-law parogram (not Stanford Law School). Is there any document showing how may Stanford undergrads apply for law schools ?

It really doesn’t matter how many Stanford undergrads versus other schools apply.

If you can get in to a top undergrad and maintain a really high GPA and test well on the LSATA you can go to a top law school.

Frankly, though, I wouldn’t encourage one to be a lawyer, at least for a big law firm.

Everybody can see your intension. How poor your intension is

just an FYI law school is not coveted anymore… like in the old days

law school applications dropped by over 40% since 2008.

At Harvard Law School , Undergrad colleges represented are (approximate numbers)

Harvard Collge : more than 300
Yale College :: 80
Princeton :: 60
Columbia :: 60
Brown:: 40
UPenn:: 30
Berkeley::20
Dartmouth:: 20
Stanford :: 20

@sbballer completely irrelevant to the discussion.

As for the numbers at each Law School, you can’t really say anything without knowing the base rates - i.e. how many people applied in the first place from each college.

@JamesVanc can u include the source of the Haravrd law numbers?

Also as point out above you need to know how many people applied and how many people got accepted to say anything meaningful about which school does better. This again says nothing.
