I hear lots of good things about the Honors program, but is it too large to be prestigious? Can anyone tell their experiences in the program?

little help..bump

I'm wondering about this too.

My D has been accepted into the Honors Program for Fall 09. It is excellent. She has several friends who are in it and have nothing but good things to say. If you meet the requirements you are in it. The housing for Honors is the best- brand new apartment style dorms. Check out the website at honors.ua.edu. I don't think it loses its prestige, by having a larger program they are able to offer more Honors classes. Honors faculty is very interested in seeing the students succeed.

My DS is a current Freshman. He will have Junior status next semester thanks to the 45 credit hours he aquired from his High School AP exams. (I don't recall any other schools he looked at allowing that many AP credits!) He is home for the Christmas break and returns to campus on Jan. 5th, 2009.

He is very happy with his decision to attend Bama. I just asked him the OP's question reguarding the Honors Program. He said "If they (potential students) are concerned about the size of the HP, they need to know that Honors classes are limited to 15 students per class". There are lots of Honors classes to pick from and there are also seminars each semester that are only available to the Honors College students. I checked the graduation requirements for the UHP. You must take a minimum of 18 honors hours. You must also fulfill honors course requirements at the same rate you fulfill course requirements for graduation. In reality, you need to take only one to two Honors courses per semester.

Bamagirl16 hit the nail on the head when she stated "Honors faculty is very interested in seeing the students succeed." Now that my son has completed his first semester, it is clear to him that the faculty make every effort to provide the UHP students with the resources needed to maximize their learning experience. My son did participate in the Alabama Action service-learning program the week before the campus opened for new and returning students. He had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people that have a vested interest in seeing the UHP succeed. Every night during Alabama Action he was having dinner or listening to guest speakers that are passionate about their work with high risk children.

Think about the mentors in your life thus far that have inspired you and/or made a difference in your life. What is it about that person or people that has helped direct you and encouraged you to excel in academics and leadership? If you decide to attend the Univ. of Alabama, you will be surrounded by faculty that hope to tap into your successes and inspire you to do bigger and greater things. Other colleges have similar opportunites.
The bottom line is, you are in charge of your own college experience. If you are a motivated and hard working student, Alabama's Honors College has committed to provide resources and opportunities to any and all students ready to learn and succeed in life.

I'm sure you have heard the phrase...."You only get out of it what you are willing to put into it." No matter where you attend college, please don't waste the opportunities that lie ahead. Enjoy the remainder of your senior year.
