im prolly going to end up going here and i was wondering how good the premed program is. anyone in program at uiuc right now? lemme know.

i heard there is no real premed program there...??? is the med school good, if it exists? and how are volunteer and intern opportunities? anyone know what percent gets into med school once they graduate?

it seems as though the engineering majors and bio majors get a lotta respect, but i assume the same would happen anywhere else...so is this a good way to gauge the qualit of the program?

thanks

also, how hard is it to get a good premed gpa?

Pre-med, virtually anywhere, is not really a major but instead a concentration of courses you will need to have to be able take the med school exam and get admitted. Though many pre-med undergrads may major in biology, chemistry, or related areas, that is not actually necessary; instead, what is necessary is that you take the list of courses needed and there are many people who major in things seemingly unrelated to medicine that still qualify for med school. UIUC undergrad would be fine for a future med school applicant. But med school admission depends heavily on GPA and test scores. You should be aware that at UIUC, particularly for sciences and engineering courses, that little grade inflation goes on -- e.g., if 98% of the class scores 65 out of a 100 point test a prof is more likely to give them all D's rather setting up any curve. As a result, it can be difficult to get those high grades needed for entry to med school.

As to Illinois medical school, be aware that the main University of Illinois medical college is at University of Illinois Chicago. The Urbana-Champaign medical school (which does exist) is really a branch of that one. The UIC medical school is fine.

i'm a pre-med-intergrative biology major here and i have the stats somewhere but not with me right now. off the top of my head, (if i can remember correctly) somewhere around 148 got in a medical school (i don't know how many applied) with an average gpa of 3.69 of accepted students--now this would be REALLY hard to get at uiuc esepecially since, like that gentleman said prior to i, there is no grade inflation. also uiuc has a grading system with +/-, A = 92.5 or more, A-=90 to 92.4.. now A = 4.00, but A- = 3.66! that would really hurt your gpa! so i would say it will be a little harder to get a gpa around 3.69 here, unless you're pretty good.
