How Good Is The Thornton School Of Music?

I currently plan to hopefully transfer to USC in 2008 as a music major into the Thornton School Of Music. My goals are the following: to be able to write, record, produce, the whole nine yards, etc. So I'm assuming the best way to achieve that would be to major in Music Industry. However, I am curious as to the quality and the competition of the Thornton School Of Music. Does it rank rather highly amongst the other music schools around the nation? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

thornton is a great music school. i researched the school a lot when i wanted to be a music major. very competitive though...

Thanks, Cameron. I had a feeling it was competitive. My problem right now is that I am currently a student of Chaffey College (community college) and I have intentions on applying to USC with my major being in the Music Industry (B.S.). As I hear, when applying to USC (and, in my case, the Thornton School Of Music), obviously one thing that helps is being able to complete as many prerequisites in one's major as possible. However, in looking at the articulation agreement that USC has with my current school, there are a few things that I am puzzled with...

As part of the core requirements, there are some courses that my school offers that seem to be very similar to the ones that USC offers as part of the required programs for the Music Industry (B.S.) major. However, they are not listed in any area of the articulation agreement. To give an example on some of the courses...

275ab Recording Arts Workshop (4-4, FaSp) Principles, techniques, and aesthetic possibilities of the recording studio chain and its application to various media. Open to recording arts and music industry majors only.

Then there's one at my school that's similar...

Music 11 (1.5) Theory and application of contemporary recording concepts and techniques utilizing modern technology in the recording studio.

Another one...

446ab Computer Assisted Recording and Editing (2-2, FaSp) Techniques and applications of recording and editing sound on personal computers. Hardware, software, editing for song, sound effects and dialog for film.

Then at Chaffey:

Music 12 - Electronic Music (3) - Electronic Sound Production: Topics include: sound types, sound manipulation, sequencing, MIDI and editing.

And then another requirement is to fulfill some courses in business. One course being BUAD 307.

307 Marketing Fundamentals (4) Develops a managerial viewpoint in planning and evaluating marketing decisions of the firm: products, pricing, channels, promotion, information processing, legal implications, and marketing in contemporary society.

And my school offers a course with the following, that seems similar...

BUS-40 (3) - Marketing Principles - Principles and methods of marketing as practiced by successfully managed business firms. Course is management-oriented, covering demand analysis, forecasting, product development, price determination, distribution channels, material handling, advertising, personal selling, and global and internet marketing.

There are more, but these are just examples. So my question is this: even though my school offers similar courses, should I avoid taking these courses, as they are not part of the articulation agreement and, thus, wouldn't have any use at USC? Because it would seem pointless taking these courses now only to find out that they are not transferable, though at the same time, I fear that this could also hurt my chances at getting into Thornton as my music prerequisites wouldn't be much, according to the list. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Why not email or call Thornton. You could also schedule a visit.

yea, i would e-mail the school to find out that info. i have e-mailed the music school before and it has answered all of my questions. -cameron

Hi Cameron, thanks for that, as well as lamom. Cameron, did you attend Thornton and, if so, what were your opinions of it?

no i did not attend thornton. i know people who did and they are excellent musicians. i have only heard great things about the school
