how good is tufts at economics???

anyone know?

thank you!

They are supposed to be excellent; it's a way for them to make up for a lack of a proper business school. In fact, I believe the most popular double major at Tufts University is International Relations/Economics.

Lack of a business school doesn't necessarily relate to quality of economics at all. Tufts is solid as are lot of the LACs, Princeton, Brown (none of which have a business school).

No - I didn't mean that Tufts economics were weak in any way; I should have probably elabourated a bit. As you said, the lack of a business school doesn't mean anything. In short, Tufts is very strong in economics.

Do you follow him around eng_dude? How bloodthirsty. But of course, deny that you have any ulterior motives to asking such an innocent question - is it wrong just to ask for just a small clarification?

< 3 minutes between yours and mine

D'oh! I wouldn't dare jump to such conclusions....Got any thing real to contribute to the discussion here?

Coincidence upon checks? My my we are paranoid.

if you're looking for the best in econ, you should check out chicago.

From your list, I dunno how to compare with Tufts, but the best are probably Harvard, Williams, and Amherst. Most of the others are also good.

Didn't think so, sniffles.

well, i absolutely love tufts and my "main" major if i get in would be international relations and economics would be my second one because it sounds interesting and useful. so, im not really looking into schools like amherst and williams (altho they are excellent) because their IR/studies program isn't as strong and i really doubt i can get into harvard haha.

thank you so much for the replies so far! very helpful

good luck whaleback!

lol whaleback...that's a silly, silly s/n. Where did you get it?

haha well, its kinda long, but what the heck:

when i was a freshman some of my friends and i went to sea world and we did one of those interactive things where you can like swim with dolphins and whales for a day (yea we were huge nerds back then lol) so whenever it was my turn to feed and touch the whales in the water i kept slipping off the side of the pool and falling into the water (i was wearing these really slippery shoes) until i finally got on and the whale kinda jolted and i slipped and fell on top whale's back and broke my nose. so yea, i remember that VERY well.

please excuse my really nerdy story haha. :D

thanks for the support eng dude!

lol. You'll fit right in at Tufts. More power to ya. Probably even hear stories from Snuffles about her overextended stays at band camp! :)

lol this one time, at band camp.

nah whaleback, you're just the kind of nerd tufts is looking for. take no offense, for i am a nerd as well.

bonne chance!

MIT is not just "also good" in economics. They are ranked right on top with Chicago.

another question: (haha so many...)

how good is johns hopkins at economics?

All the schools you mention may provide pretty good eduation in econ. But if you are looking for top programs, look at the following list:

For grad schools:
US News 2006 Ranking (ranked in 2005)
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology 5.0
University of Chicago 5.0
3. Harvard University (MA) 4.9
Princeton University (NJ) 4.9
Stanford University (CA) 4.9
University of California–Berkeley 4.9
7. Yale University (CT) 4.8
8. Northwestern University (IL) 4.6
9. University of Pennsylvania 4.5
10. University of California–San Diego 4.3
11. Columbia University (NY) 4.2
University of California–Los Angeles 4.2
University of Michigan–Ann Arbor 4.2
University of Wisconsin–Madison 4.2
15. New York University 4.1
University of Minnesota–Twin Cities 4.1

There's no such thing as undergrad ranking. Graduate ranking may not be perfect but I'd use them as better indicator than most people's opinions on this board. I would highly suggest Chicago, Northwestern, and NYU. Michicgan/Wisconsin if you don't mind large schools (Wisc is a very good school but relatively easier to get in).

thanks a lot for this list! that's awesome.

I certainly wouldn't choose NYU, Northwestern, Minnesota over Dartmouth, Duke, Brown, Cornell or at least a dozen LACs based on this list.
