Academic wise, how to people see UCSD? How prestigious of a university is it? Its definitely not UCLA or Berkeley but, do you think its a good school? or a place only scientists go, or people who couldn't get into the better uc schools. just wondering.

.Archives.

It’s good.

the better UC it is the harder you have to study, I don’t think I want to study that hard though, I want to have some fuuuuuun …

To the op: UCSD is a first-rate, world-class UC in an incredibly beautiful setting. Academic-wise, it’s rated #7 in the nation for Public Universities by U.S. News and World Report.

Since you’re looking at reputation/prestige, it’s ranked #30 in the world by “Reputation” in the “Times Higher Educations 2010-2011 World University Rankings the global authority on higher education performance” - [Top Universities by Reputation 2011](http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2010-2011/reputation-rankings.html)

You will find students also admitted to CAL and UCLA who selected UCSD. Take a look here at what’s going on [This Week @ UCSD March 14, 2011](http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/thisweek/2011/03/14_index.asp) – including the following headline: “Study Recommends UC San Diego Athletics Program Transition to Division I,” and go visit!

I would say it’s almost on par with UCLA in terms of academics, surpassing it in several fields, but nowhere near Berkeley.

@UC5
Haha i read that email too. The headline really got my attention.

I remember during the welcome week convocation, one of the speakers said “UCSD is one of the three flagship universities of the UC system. And we all know the other two, which are behind us.”

“It’s definitely not a UCLA or Berkeley.”

Think again. I don’t know about Berkeley but I study about 10x harder than my friends that go to UCLA in similar majors.

Its super good!!!

@ucsandiego
That is true at times. I’m a freshmen EE major while my friend is a sophomore in EE. I have already completed my first lab while he has never done a lab yet. UCLA and UCSD are about the same rank in this department as well.

I’m not saying UCSD is better than UCLA but it’s false to classify UCLA as a better school than UCSD based on their rankings.

I graduated from UCSD.

If you got admitted at UCLA or Berkeley, I’d go there in a heart beat. The campus is whatever, theres like 12391823 cafeterias, and 89342183291 students in each class.

And in terms of social life. I envied all SDSU students. I had fun at UCSD, but if i had to do it all over, I would have much rather chosen Cal Poly; just for the sheer fact that I’d probably learn more in 1 year at Cal Poly then I ever did at UCSD.
