I’m thinking of applying to Fordam, but I don’t know much about the school. Their tuition is very expensive, does Fordam have good merit aid? Also, how diverse is Fordam and does Fordham use grade inflation/deflation? Any advice would be nice thanks
First of all it is Fordham. Fordham is an excellent school in a fantastic location.
I disagree with TomSrOfBoston
I’m currently a student at rose hill so i’m gonna talk about rose hill, not Lincoln center (as the two campuses are actually pretty different)
Merit Aid: Actually very generous, I did not do as well as I would have like in High School and I still got two merit scholarships. However, even with those scholarships I still think the value being placed on my education is absolutely absurd.
Diversity: There isn’t much. Besides there being a decent amount of asian international students, its basically all white, liberal, catholic.
I just wanted to talk about location also, because TomSrOfBoston brought it up. Campus security is good but off campus is super dangerous. There were around five off campus muggings of students a week for my first two months of schools.
I think a majority of kids really like Fordham, but it needs to fit your personality. Also, it really is only good for a handful of majors. -The jesuit education isn’t for everybody
I disagree with it being all Catholic. Only about 50% of students are Catholic. I’m an atheist and have met plenty of non-Catholics here.
Tuition
I transferred to Fordham and received merit aid. It reduced tuition by 50%.
Diversity
The school certainly promotes and embraces diversity; however, the school is not very diverse. The Bronx is very diverse.
Fordham is known for not using grade inflation in theory.
As @diplomill mentions, the area surrounding campus is not very safe. I very much dislike the Bronx.
@leonard2 Here is my take on Fordham in regards to aid, they don’t meet full need. But, with that in mind, to keep the merit scholarship, depending on what type it is, can be very hard or it can be very easy. It depends on your major and how hard you want to work. My daughter knows someone who is an English major and lost her scholarship because all she did was party all the time. It’s up to you.
My daughter lucked out with a Jogues Scholarship, which you only need a cumulative 2.75 to keep. Fordham was very generous with Grant-in-Aid, however, almost double the scholarship. They saw some sort of potential with my daughter, I guess. There are other scholarships offered that say you must maintain a cumulative 3.0 to keep.
Grade inflation/deflation? Depends. We found Biology and Chemistry grade deflates.
As for the area, it’s the Bronx. Use common sense. I grew up not too far from Fordham. Use common sense.
