I'm an Illinois resident looking to attend a CCC this fall, after I graduate. I hope to enroll in TAG and transfer out to one of the UC's. Anyways, how hard is the typical CCC class? Anyone have any experience with SBCC (Santa Barbara City College)?

Thanks!

It varies on the college, the nature of the class, the professor, etc, so its very difficult to just label a course “difficult or not”. Science and math classes will typically be very rigorous regardless of who you get because that’s just the nature of the class. Other classes, like those in the humanities, greatly vary on the professor. I had an anthropology class that was no walk in the park. it On the flip side, however, my critical thinking class this semester has been a breeze. I don’t have particular experience with SBCC, but I would recommend (when the class schedule is released) to go on rate my professors and just look up the professor/course that you’re interested in. Those reviews are usually a pretty good indicator of how the course will be. Remember though, those reviews are written with bias so you will always find a student who hates a class, even with the best of professors.

Thanks for the info/advice!

I took an an online SBCC course during the summer. It was zoology and it was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken, including the ones I have taken at university. It was very, very writing intensive. That’s all we did- write really long essays. My other CC courses were a breeze but this class alone took a lot out of me. I hated it.

But like the other poster said, go to ratemyprofessor. I was not caught off guard by the rigor of this course because I read the reviews and many people said that the course was a lot of work.

I got an A but it was the hardest I had ever worked for one. So it depends.

I just wanted to attest to the clarity and accuracy of kingdomsroa48’s post. It is completely true. I was worried I was going to see responses like “IT’S SO EASY” or “IT’S SO HARD,” when it truly varies from school to school, course to course, and professor to professor. I second his/her recommendation to check out “rate my professors,” and, in doing so, remember to take all reviews with a grain of salt as well. Good luck! ^_^

Same as the above comment, it really has to do with the class and professor. Some teach you like you are still in high school and some treat you like it is Standford. Due to rate my professor I have never disliked a professor. It also helps when choosing classes for the semester so I can see how their workloads are when picking multiple classes. But ya, some people will talk horrible about a professor that I loved, just because they got a lower grade. Sometimes with math and other harder courses it is the class that is hard, not the professor which people don’t understand. Read a lot of reviews and consider the common comments. That site is a life saver and helped my GPA a lot!

Seems like ratemyproffesor will be extremely useful! Thanks guys.

DITTO on what was said about ratemyprofessors. Literally have no idea how our parents got through school without it.

I found almost all my classes to be not that difficult. The important thing for me was to try hard in every class. If you put in the effort you will succeed. The people who complained that calculus was too hard were also never in the math lab looking for help. If you try 100% it will be hard to not get good grades. I have not taken chem or physics classes so I can’t speak for those classes, but I’m in calc 3 now and every math class has been very manageable in terms of rigor.

Easier than at a UC. Will help you prepare for the course though. Like Javy says, it teaches you self discipline.

Like everyone said, some are easy and some are hard it just depends on the class. Very, very hard classes are ones like calc, chem, and languages, but other classes like communications can be so easy you can sleep through them and still get an A.

-I’m an Santa Monica College student.
