How hard are science classes at UF?

I just got accepted to UF class of 2017 and am planning on attending this fall. I'm still trying to decide on a major, and one factor I've been considering is what science classes I will have to take for different majors. I have a hard time catching onto science concepts quickly, though I got straight A's in high school chemistry, biology, and anatomy honors, and also straight A's in regular physics. The major I'm looking at requires me to take intro to chem, general chem 1, and general physics 1. Would these classes be hard to get A's in for someone who isn't good at science? Or could I still get a good grade if I go to the professor's hours and tutoring? I am willing to work hard; that is how I got A's in high school, but I don't want classes that will be too overwhelming and stressful for me.

Go to class, read the book, and go to office hours, and you should have no reason not to do well.

the classes are hard…they are weed out classes…low pass rate on chemistry I.

I agree with the above poster. The beginning science classes (particularly chem 1) deliberately try to weed students out and generally make things as hard as possible in the subject. It’s really important to stay on top of your stuff.

Good question. How many students in a typical science class such as Basic Chemistry Concepts or Applied Physics.

what were your stats? please post so I can compare mine!

You dont necessarily need A+'s in every science class you take. Chem 1 is awful, just be happy to pass. If you work hard you should be fine. Also take Gower for chem 1

I want to get in to graduate school once I finish, and for the program I want to get in to they look at your GPA in the prerequisite courses. Chemistry and physics are included in the prereqs, so they will influence my GPA a decent amount :/
Does anyone know how much tutoring and help is available for someone taking chem? I’d prefer to not pay for tutoring as pretty much all my money will be going towards tuition and housing and whatnot. I’ve heard about professors hours, do they help a lot in chem?

There are group tutoring sessions for Chem and also you can pay to go to Study Edge. and also a study guide called “smokin notes”…honestly my straight A daughter who WAS pre-med really struggled with chemistry and did all of the above and barely got by. I as a parent feel they (the chemistry department) really takes pleasure in failing students. I myself was a biology major and one class away from a chemistry minor and do not remember my professors ever being so ruthless and hard. I do not feel they “teach” chemistry at UF, you are on your own…we pay to have our kids learn, but there doesn’t seem to be anyone to “teach” them…only to try to fail them. very disturbing in my eyes.
