How hard are these classes?

Chibearsfan

I know I said I was done with this post, and I avoided even looking at it for a couple of days... but, finally, I knew I had to look.

First, I want to say you have been helpful to me on some previous posts, and some of the other math folks (including Dilksy). For that, I am thankful. I have tried to "pay it forward" to others.

I am, however, amazed at the illogical statements you made in your post. For example, you say, "You simply don't know what it's like, so leave it up to those who have been there to know." You seem to know what B-School is like, yet you haven't been there. Surely, your superior mind can recognize the inconsistency inherent in this statement. You also think you know me, but you don't. You even think I'm a guy. I won't chuckle at that because the majority of math majors and B-School students are guys.

I did make one intentionally silly post in response to a statement that "not a single person from B-School could even attempt a Math major." I incorrectly assumed assumed Dilsky was engaging in hyperbole and wanted to have a little fun. So, I engaged in some stereotypes about math majors and clearly noted in my post that it was for fun and in a p.s. that Dilsky was, in the main, correct. (Believe it or not, I am considered a math nerd at my backwater high school and even thought about majoring in math. I guess no one else in my little corner of the world realized I did not have the credentials to make such an attempt.) Some grad math student may even be chuckling at your post... I don't know. I do know that people cannot always be judged by their high school stats and that success in college is not predetermined by these.

You all can belittle me all you want and chalk it up as helping out your fellow man. However, what you don't realize about me, is that I can rise to the level of competition around me and have taken advantage of every math opportunity offered to me (as paltry as though offerings are... we didn't even have AP Calculus... gasp... and I never heard of the US Math Olympiad until I started reading CC).

I would hate to think what you guys would do to Einstein if he posted his high school stats or the Nobel Laureate in Physics who couldn't even qualify for Mensa. Ignorance does not equal stupidity.

Chibears, I'm guessing you're a football fan by your screen name. Well, I'm a KC fan and they have a guy by the name of Priest Holmes who was undrafted and became one of the top running backs in pro football. What would have happened if he listened to those whispering in his ear... "You're too small... You weren't even a starter in college... etc."

I may be naive and may have read the "Little Engine that Could" one too many times or love the movie "Gattaca" or have my listened to my history teachers about the success stories arising from the many failures of Abraham Lincoln and Harry Truman before they became president.

I've watched you guys hammer on more than one freshman to be. Please try to remember you were young and naive once upon a time. I will remember not to joke around with math majors.

Did this post beat my others on the "silliness" scale? ;) I have to get back to the real fireworks on this fine Independence Day.

P.S. Christine, you seem too normal to be a math major. I guess its because you're a female. :)

Anhydrosis2000, Hehe...thank you I think? I always thought female math majors were stereotypically supposed to be the weirdest. No. Just hideous. Oh dear. It's not true!

tetrahedr0n, Spatzier is very cool and I didn't listen to nearly anything I was advised, either.

Why do 4th of July festivities end so early in this town? Happy Birthday, America!

"This socially retarded math major just got back from Atlanta"

Hahaha, now really, I didn't think most socially retarded people were capable of humor? ;)

They are. Online. In person, their jokes just sound dumb. Trust me.

Holy cow, how am I this capable of humor online?

Oh wait. Maybe I am pretty cool...

Whoa...

Probabilistically, the little guy isn't likely to succeed, and only the ones who have enough of a drive to overcome any possible nay-sayers are the ones with a chance at succeeding. Kids today are being coddled more than ever. It's not my job to give little Johnny what is most likely false hope. All we're trying to do is give the best assessment we can on limited information. We can't judge intangibles or things that people just don't tell us. Places like this aren't very helpful if we just tell everybody they have a chance.

For every person like you who had a crappy background but still has the intelligence/drive to succeed, there's just as many if not more with equal qualifications who fall flat on their face. We never claim to be correct, just speculate as best we can when people ask for advice.

Christine, you're living in martha cook next year? I am too (I did last year too!). Oh and by dress code rules do mean the "No PJs on the first floor" one? Because everyone breaks that one..actually a lot of residents find ways of breaking most of mcb's rules..

YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was planning on waking up on Friday, going to Math 295 in my pajamas, and then going back to sleep because I can.

haha yes, that's totally fine..everyone does it. What room are you in?

How about you?

I'm in 205! 308..haha oh i remember that room! My friends lived in it last year. A part of their ceiling broke off and crashed on to one of my friend's bed (good thing she wasnt there at the time)...so there was a big hole in the ceiling and they had to move in the guestroom until it was fixed..haha, not to scare you, i'm sure its safe now.

Uh huh...oh. Oh dear. So otherwise, is the room fine?

Oh look! I even found a picture: <a href="http://umichigan.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=31377162&op=1&view=user&subj=2231770&id=2231770%5B/url%5D">http://umichigan.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=31377162&op=1&view=user&subj=2231770&id=2231770</a>.
Anyways, it was probably the most ridiculous/hilarious thing that happened at mcb that semester. Oh that, and the study room ceiling caving into the study room right below it. Oh marth..

Yeah, I'm sure the room is fine, its one of the smaller rooms at marth (though still big compared to the rooms at regular dorms) and you share a sink with 2 other double rooms (which might stink because most rooms have their own sink). Though it is nice that you're on the 3rd floor..the 2nd and 3rd are the most "social" floors, and have their own study rooms.

That's what my mom meant when she said they really needed to replace the roof...

yeah, seriously. But apparently, the money was put to better use by spending 550k on the steinway that about 3 of the residents actually use..

Apparently they need to replace the whole roof, and it's quite expensive due to the archetecture style. Definitely more than the 550k for whatever this steinway thingy is.

its a piano. yes, it is probably pretty expensive..but they do spend a lot of money on pretty useless things.

They have a Steinway in the dorms? Oh... sweeet.... is there anything like that in squad or will I have to invade martha cook every so often?

You must befriend a Cookie first and then be escorted. I'm guessing that rule is enforced.

haha, the steinway is only at martha. I dont know if the other dorms have pianos or not.
