How hard does Columbia throw down??

How's the party scene? I want a "smart party school", and Columbia is my top choice. How are the people, what are the sorority girls like, hows the greek life (housing???), how nice are the students, and just how amazing is Manhattan's Ivy at having a good time? Of course, I'll study hard, but come on, this is important.

okay this is such a weird question. why? because the question asks to generalize about culture, when such cannot happen. but eh look at me, i will entertain it anyhow

could you find people that party harder than they do at state schools? yes. could you find people who spend their entire life indoors? yes.

could you find people in between? yes. you get decide who you hang out with, and who does the things you want to do - and i assure you, you can find those people at cu.

a few things about new york - drugs and booze are a plenty. beware of both or either one interrupting your coursework, frankly partying too much is the only real barrier between you and graduating. so be conscientious of that fact.

greek life is not hardcore. sorority girls are made up mostly of reformed nerdy girls in high school. and frankly, most kids who get into columbia are slightly on the social awkward side of things, i mean it is what you did to get into columbia in the first place. there are greeks, there are folks that take them seriously. but it doesn’t control or dominate the party scene. so greek life at large is not very stereotypical, it is made up a mish-mash of different parts of the uni, and if you are in a greek - that’s fine, but it doesn’t mean you have to be greek to go to frat parties.

on campus parties exist, but they aren’t where kids soak in the real fun. they can get closed down pretty quickly, mostly because you live in a place where your neighbors aren’t afraid to call the cops on you - it isn’t the middle of a field in iowa, its new york city.

most people use new york city (increasingly over their four years) as their playground. and there is a lot to do - great house parties in interesting parts of the city, great underground parties you can get invited to, and then there are bars+clubs. clubs in new york have lost their appetite - very scene-y, very much about money, not about having a good time. but everything from k-town, to les, the village, brooklyn, chelsea, etc., you can have a good time.

Interesting. However, I do not appreciate you calling me a “simpleton”. I simply wanted to know the “general” culture around Columbia. Of course one cannot generalize an entire student body; I was not asking you do do this. Simply an abstract, if you will. Thank you, though, for your very observant review.

i revised first of all - and i called the question simpleton. cause it was.

I think you’re too kewl for Columbia, stud. Your use of such terms as “throw down” demonstrates that you have an amazing penchant for knowing how to have a good time.

Not gonna lie… I lol’d at the above.

is someone upset that they’re at home on collegeconfidential.com at 1:00 a.m. on a saturday morning instead of being out “throwing it down”?

is someone upset that they’re at home on collegeconfidential.com at 2:00 a.m. on a saturday morning instead of being out “throwing it down”?

this can go on for infinity, so much fun!

is some upset that they’re at home on collegeconfidential at 7:30 a.m. on a sunday morning instead of waking up with a hangover from an awesome throw down?

Throwdown with Bobby Flay.

Bobby Flay is so annoying. It’s like he does that entire show just to validate his ego. -_-

Sort of like going to Columbia?

I lol’d at this thread. my excuse for being on? It’s 4PM Sunday and i have to go to church in less than an hour so I can’t go out now.

HAHAHA i just checked this and I love it.

@ Columbia 2002: Don’t worry. I’ll reform Columbia.
@ admissionsgeek: You’re just a rude person.

and I LOVE Bobby Flay, I met him. He’s the man.

hahah <3 this thread…
but seriously how is the social scene at columbia (prob aimed towards admissionsgeek)…how are the girls there on average? how hard is it to meet ppl?

and throwdown w/ bobby flay…great show

@syf330, admissionsgeek (which is what he/she is) already answered it. Apparently they’re “reformed nerdy girls”, which sounds good because it would be refreshing to see some hot girls who can actually carry on an intellectual conversation. And to answer your meeting people question, it depends on how social you are. I couldn’t live without being outgoing. You gotta just throw yourself out there and be yourself (most importantly). Shouldn’t be a problem. It’s college; everyone wants to hang out.

Food network is amazing

This thread is painful – starting with the thread title containing some dbag’s attempt to demonstrate his coolness and continuing on with multiple other dbags placing @‘s in front of other users’ names to demonstrate their hipness. Thankfully, this phenomenon is contained in only this thread.

Get over yourself. I’m sorry you were a freak in high school, but that doesn’t have anything to do with the people on this thread. Go be lame somewhere else, God knows Columbia needs an influx of cool. We have every right to have fun here, go suck the fun out of some other forum.

Columbia can throw down really hard, generally speaking there is less binge drinking and fewer huge rave parties than at other schools. But a lot of people live in suites and i’ve been to some pretty great parties in a few dorms (East campus, claremont in particular). The bars near campus are also lively on thursday, friday and esp. saturday nights. The frats throw a good party once in a while (usually lots of beer pong and not that great). And then there are small groups of people who spend a lot of money and just club downtown, this obviously gets pretty crazy/awesome.

Columbia is a pretty mixed and mature campus, so in most dorms, people have more mellow social gatherings: potlucks, wine and cheese evenings, board game nights, go out for dinner come back watch a movie etc. There really is something for everyone, I doubt someone can name a common type of social event that you won’t find at Columbia.

Columbia is also not nearly that socially awkward, chicago and mit are known to be the socially awkward schools (caltech reigns supreme here). There are definitely many socially awkward kids at columbia, but it compares to the proportion at say penn, princeton or harvard.
