I know it will be a lot of work, but is it really difficult? Does it require a lot of deep understanding, analysis, and calculations, or is it just a lot of memorization? Or is it both? I've never been the best "problem solver" but I'm pretty good at memorizing things. Also, is it hard to keep a 3.5+ gpa as a bio major? Thank you for any answers!

No it’s really easy. I have a 4.0 and barely put any effort into my bio major

Biology is probably the easiest of the sciences. It’s likely going to be a lot of rote memorization and regurgitation.

That said, I think it can be hard to achieve a high GPA in a Biology major because you’re “competing” with all of the premeds. If your classes are curved, keep in mind that you’ll be compared to people who need to get an A.

It does depend somewhat on your college as well as whether you take honors courses and your electives.

If you like memorizing then you’ll be fine. I didn’t find much problem solving in my biology classes… This is why I changed to physics.

People are right about memorizing, but I don’t know if it’s the kind of memorizing you’re thinking of.

For example, in history class you use rote memorization. You know that FDR was president during WW2, the Battle of Fallujah was in 2003, etc. In Biology, you memorize CONCEPTS. This includes using rote memorization for little things, but you’ll have to know the big picture. Cellular respiration and photosynthesis are big ones that will come up again and again: Those processes are very complex, and you’ll have to “memorize” every last detail about them. When you get to a certain level, it’s still memorization, just at a very very deep level of understanding.

Also, I’m assuming you’re Pre-med because of your GPA above 3.5 thing. If you’re a Pre-med you’ll be taking classes besides bio, like: Chem, Ochem, Physics, Biochem, Psychology, Calc, etc. So you may be great at memorizing stuff for Bio, but ose other subjects are a whole different kind of thinking. Be prepared for that.

I finished my first semester as a bio major horribly with a 2.9 gpa. It is a TON of memorization, and I made the mistake of taking 2 science classes and a math class in one semester, plus 2 other easier classes. It was way too much for 1 semester. The major is hard, but my sister is graduating cum laude with her bio degree so it’s not impossible! Good luck :)

Okay thank you everyone! And yes, I was thinking about being pre-med.
