How hard is Algebra 2?

I was wondering if it would be too hard to take algebra 2 over the summer. I am currently an eighth grader (please don't yell at me for being on here - I'm just a bit nervous for high school and figured HSL would be the best place to get some advice) in geometry. Would it be unrealistic to take algebra 2 over the summer and expect to be successful in pre calculus during the school year? I pick up things pretty easily and I'm getting a 100 in geometry right now, but would cramming a year's worth of math into one summer be too hard?

I got C’s in geometry and an A in the first semester of Alg II. The second semester is harder but it’s still nowhere near as difficult as geometry was for me. If you got 100 in Geometry then there’s no question you’ll do good in this.

From my experience, Precalculus is just Algebra 2 + Trigonometry + alternate coordinate systems and introductory calculus, depending on your instructor.

I was in Algebra 2 as an 8th grader. I personally think it would have been easier to cram geometry into a summer, but the nature of precalculus might allow you to do such a thing with Algebra 2. Check your state or local curricula and contrast them. I personally think that if you really want to, go for it.

Last year I took Algebra II / Trig. I’m not sure when the class made the switch to Trigonometry, but the day we started logarithms (halfway through the year) it got pretty painful.

I still got a 100 though, and a 92 on the regent.

I’m in 8th grade and I did algebra 2 this year and was fine with it. I’m in a very similar situation as you are, bu I’m going to do geometry over the summer. How difficult do you think it will be for me to do geometry over the summer? And if you are a fat learner I think you’ll have no problem with algebra 2

I took precalc the summer after I finished trig… and it was basically all trig review.

@iloveucla456 Well I’ve heard from some people that geometry’s easier than algebra 2, so I don’t think you’ll have a problem.

Do you guys think that algebra 2 is easy enough to take in four weeks? That’s the only thing I’m a little unsure about. My district has really short summers and that’s usually around how long summer school lasts. It goes from 7:30-4:00 each day.

All I can say is: Hope you’re allowed to drink coffee.

Geometry and Algebra tend to be classes where one person is good at one and not so good at the other. Although people are sometimes good at both.

It isn’t that hard. As long as you study and work hard, you should be fine.

That’s what I did during 8th grade summer. I took Algebra 2 online and did PreCalc freshman year. It went good.

I thought Algebra II honors was the hardest math I’ve taken so far in HS. I had a ridiculously hard teacher and she treated it almost like a college class - basically a couple tests a semester and the midterm/final determined our grade. I was a sophomore and definitely was not ready for college-level work, but I still managed a B+ by working my ass off.

I was much better at geometry than I was at algebra II. I wouldn’t try to cram it into one summer - but if you think you can handle it, go for it.

I agree - if you think you can handle it, go for it. Maybe ask whoever teaches algebra II at your school for some of their old tests if you’re not taking through your school. Then you’ll have an idea of what the other kids are doing and stuff.

Also, if it doesn’t work out during the summer, then you can always switch to algebra II a few weeks before school starts maybe?

I didn’t think geometry or algebra II was especially hard. They’re just different concepts. I’m in Calc AB now and I’d say out of geometry, algebra II, precalc and calc, the hardest was definitely precalc. I don’t know if that was just teaching concepts but I just didn’t grasp it as well as I do geo, algebra, or calc AB. I would have loved to get it out of the way freshmen year when my other classes were still pretty easy and I had a little more time and stuff.

Go for it if you want!

If you think, geometry was harder than algrebra 1 then you will do better. If you thinking the other way around then you might do worse (not signafically worse).

But to me Algrebra 2 is easier than other math courses but it also depends on the teacher- hope for good teacher lol.

Honestly, I thought Algebra II was the easiest math class I’ve taken, but that’s probably because I had a super amazing teacher. I got a B in the class, but that’s because I was taking that with all my AP classes (which were all humanities related) and I got super lazy. I’m usually more of a humanities person, but to me that class was easy.

Chemistry on the other hand is another story.

Thanks for the reassurance, guys. I’m still a little antsy, but I’m pretty sure I’ll take it over the summer. Algebra was way easier for me than geometry is, so I’m hoping I can say the same for algebra 2.

I don’t really think it’s wise to take Algebra 2 in the summer. If you want to major in something that relies on math, you need to have your basic algebra down cold. You may be able to pick it up in 8 weeks, but if you don’t it’s going to make every future class much more difficult.

If you feel the need to take something in the summer to get ahead, I think Pre-calculus is a better candidate. The reason why it has so many different names at different schools and covers so many different topics is that there really isn’t much in it that’s actually essential. As long as you have some exposure to trig and know some identities (or really even just the Pythagorean identity…) you should be good for Calculus.

So what happened. Did you take it over summer? Did you make it to calculus 3? This was 4 yrs ago so you must have already graduated high school. What college did you pick? Congratulations btw. It’s always interests me when I come upon these old threads.
