Hi, I'm a Civil Engineering major transferring to UC or CSU in Fall '10. After Spring '10 I've completed every lower division course that is required for Berkeley and many other schools for transfer. As of now I have a 3.78 GPA. I feel like the community college I'm at has prepared me more for the "not so hardcore" Universities. My calculus and differential equations professors made their exams straightforward. My physics professor was a complete joke (I don't think I deserve the B I got in the class, more like a low C). I'm honestly too afraid of how intensely hard it would be to study CE there than other schools. But I keep reminding myself that in life its not about how "smart" you are, its about how much EFFORT you put what you are doing that makes you succeed. That's my motto in life and I've always lived by it.

So if there any CE majors in this forum, can you give me some insight on UC Berkeley CE difficulty? Workload? etc etc

I’m not an engineering major but my friends are. It seems most classes value projects and work more than test scores so you should be fine if you’re planning to work hard. You won’t get a lower grade than a B/B+ if you tried but didn’t really ace the tests.

I’m an engineering student and I don’t agree with anything in the previous post. most of the classes that you will be taking are lecture based. Maybe about 1/4 of ur classes will even have projects/labs and labs will never be worth more than 30% of your grade. Although, senior classes may be more project based.

Berkeley engineering has insane grade deflation. I’d say you can get a B/B+ if you put a lot of work into it. In reality, nobody can ace the tests because they are just that hard. only geniuses can pull off a 3.5+ GPA. If you’re willing to put a lot of effort into it, I think you’ll be alright. Just don’t cry when you see that your GPA is a lot lower than what you’re used to getting.

2nd year here in CE. I can’t tell you much about the upper division classes but the lower-div classes are quite tougher than my local CC classes. I took Calc 2 at my CC and Calc 3 and Linear Algebra/Diff equations at Cal. The latter were significantly harder at Cal than Calc 2 was at my local CC. Take it with a grain of salt, but my adviser says that classes get ‘better’ once you start taking upper-division in terms of grades, if that’s your concern.

Average GPA in Berkeley CoE in case you’re interested:
Freshmen: 2.8
Soph: 3.16
Junior: 3.17
Senior: 3.2
