How hard is computer science?

Hi, I applied to UT Austin and Texas A&M with computer science as my major.
Therefore, I researched about it and many people said it is really a hard major.
I think i can do it if i work very hard but how hard is it?
Also, people say you have to know how to use the codes before you major in computer science. Is that true?
cuz I don't really know how
I will really appreciate it if you can answer it!

Hard. You should try to learn some computer languages before you enter. What are your math stats?

I’m taking Calculus AB right now and getting A+ and for SAT, I got a 620 on math and 28 on ACT

That’s good. Start teaching yourself a language, maybe C# (C sharp). You don’t have any coding experience?

what is your interest in CS if you have no coding experience? why CS? what’s the attraction?

You do not have to have coding experience to major in CS…many kids have none.

You do have to be strong in math, and if you’re getting an A+ in your AP Calc class, then that is a good sign. Do you like math?

Here is the home page for UT Austin CS 312 (the introductory course):

No I don’t hav any coding experience :frowning: is there any way to experience it before going to college??

Thank u very much!!!

Yes!!! I rlly love math!!! But do u hav to be good at science too for cs??? Cuz Im not really good at science :(

I want to be a software developer in the future but I made this decision this year so I never had a chance to learn about coding :(

^^^again, why, OP?

Do you have your own computer? Computer scientist have to be able to self teach. You will get your degree and sure they will teach you during your time at school, but things move so fast that you have to be reading and learning to keep up. I would check in with the college you get accepted to and see what they have for hardware/ software requirements. Probably Visual Studios. Maybe you can get the required computer/laptop with software early and start learning to code. Just get a tutorial book for the language and work through it. You don’t have to know about coding before you go but it surely helps make life easier.

You have to be good with logic.

“Science” is a broad category.

Pick up some tutorial books that teach you how to program is a language. You can find them in libraries or online these days.
