How hard is Cornell's Engineering School?

I'd say Cornell, because it's engineering is generally superior to UW and WUSTL's (with the possible exception of bioengineering). Its other disciplines are also quite good. The better quality of Cornell's students (compared to UW) may make for a much better atmosphere.

Note: I'm only a HS senior, going into Cornell engineering next year.

i heard cornell is only noted for engineering physics and that is the only reason driving up its ranking. I am curious to know how good is cornell's mechanical engineering program. I know they have programs and competitions that allow students to be creative and stuff. But can someone give me a general overview of what the mech eng department is like?

btw, i will be most likely attending next year.

No, it's ranked about 8-10 for most engineering disciplines, except Engineering Physics and Computer Science. I don't view the state schools, like Purdue, Georgia Tech, UIUC, ranked higher as better, especially if other disciplines or the student body is considered.

According to USNews (read: take with a grain of salt):

Best Engineering Programs Where the Highest Degree is a Doctorate:

Engineering program rank: 8
Aerospace rank: 14
Chemical rank: 15
Civil rank: 9
Computer rank: 9
Electrical rank: 8
Environmental rank: 10
Industrial/Manufacturing rank: 11
Materials rank: 9
Mechanical rank: 9
Nuclear rank: 1
Agriculture rank: 4

Someone said they preferred Olin because the male to female ration is smaller. The high ratio at Cornell's college of engineering means nothing because at Cornell, dorming is random and so is essentially every other facet of your life. All the colleges mix together in classes and extracurricular life. When you go to Cornell, you won't experience the high male to female ratio, you'll experience the quite balanced ratio of the university as a whole.

leobag, that's for Cornell's rankings in each respective category?

Leobag,

Nuclear?

Yeah there is a research reactor on the campus (Ward lab). It's an 80W TRIGA reacotr, but they decided to close it a couple years ago (mistake IMO). I think they wanted the space for a nanofab facility but lost the grant application.

Then, the Cornell Daily Sun sent a photographer into Ward. He/She was able to walk around and take pictures. The scary thing was that there still was nuclear material in there at the time. The Sun wrote Sen. Schumer about it, and Cornell sped up shipping out the material. Then, the Sun did a story about how easy it was to get in.

Cornell still has a fusion class (and probably others). The Physics dept. is also very strong.

Mech dept is in Upson Hall. About all I know is that Mech Es hate taking ECE 210, which is one of their requirements. They also have a good controls professor who runs projects like these.

@Darkestsith6: yeah, but it includes graduate work... so I don't really know what the break-down of undergrad ratings would be.

@johnM: yeah, that's what it says... but i guess Gouverneurmorris says that it shut down? I think it was for graduate studies only anyway.
