And how much does housing cost?

I'm also wondering - is it possible for a grad student to live without a car? What is the availability of vegan/organic food?

You need to look at the Penn State housing website for information about costs. There is probably information for Grad students on the PSU website.

It depends entirely on what you are looking for and how much you are willing to spend. There is plenty of housing, but realize that State College is an owners’ market, so finding a nice single is pricy.

I have know people in recent years to get by on $300 a month or so, but I would not recommend that. I would say $450-600 sharing an apartment, or $800+ for a single. Per month, year round.

Sure, many do - PSU is notoriously unfriendly to student-owned cars, and most of what you will want is within walking distance. Expect to either bum a ride or take the bus if you want access to a “big box” store or full-service grocery.

Not my thing, but I think there is decent availability - this is a popular dietary selection among the college community, and there are at least a few restaurants and groceries with a decent selection, although you may find yourself more reliant on Wegmans, which is not especially walkable.

My acceptance letter specifically said I should make a decesion soon since housing can be hard to come by. I’m looking for single rooms, I’m 29 (kinda old for a roomy imho) and OCD neat freak, hah. Most seem to be anywhere from $700-900 from my searching, though I have specifically been targeting Graduate/Professional communities (sorry youngin’s!).

If you want someplace new and don’t mind a roommate or two with undergrads I noticed they have like 2-3 new town home developments opening in the fall.
There are a few places that only rent to grad students, like the Allenway. A good realtor could also hook you up with those places, or houses where you can split the rent but have your own room. But if you are arriving this fall, wow, you need to be looking – its pretty slim pickings by now!
