How hard is it for an international to get in with financial aid at Columbia?

I'm trying to decide whether I should apply with or without financial aid or not... Does anyone have stats on this? like percentages of internationals who got in with/without FA or something like that.

Columbia doesn't extend its need-blind policy to international students. I heard that Columbia isn't very generous towards international aid candidates.

Not easy. Let's leave it at that.

You won't find these stats. Obviously, it's a lot easier to get in without aid, but if you're a strong candidate, do apply for aid. It's tough to get in, but once you're admitted you'll get a good deal from Columbia. None of the internationals I've talked to complained about their finaid package.

last year i heard that only 5 int'ls got into columbia with financial aid (am not completely sure abt it tho)..... this year they improved their financial aid policies, but not specifically towards int'ls, so i doubt they got more generous than b4... but i'm an int'l and i got in with lots of aid so don't lose hope! :)

I got in with lots of financial aid so you can too :) No seriouly though, pm me if you have any questions or need help =)

You shouldn't be sure about it at all. It's highly highly unlikely that Columbia would only admit 5 internationals with finaid. To back this up, I know personally over 10 students in the class of 2011 who are international and got aid. And no, the new aid initiative doesn't affect internationals at all, everything is unchanged for us.

And Duygu, I hate you guys for rocking the Euro Cup, :D

:D:D

Yeah those were some matches huh. The Romanians are probably ****ing their pants right now XD. It should also be fun to see Italy and France fighting for their lives =)

Hubris man, hubris. Recall Argentine in 2006. They preformed magnificently until they got kicked out by Germany. That might happen to you guys, :D

"last year i heard that only 5 int'ls got into columbia with financial aid"

this is flat out nonsense, the number is something like 50-100, i personally know of at least 10 internationals on FA, there are about 30-60 students in each year who are international and on FA. It does reduce your chances, but if you get in, they'll probably give you a ton of aid, because they'll want you pretty bad.

sorry i just remember hearing/reading it somewhere, but i probably shouldn't have said it coz i'm not really sure :P sorry if i caused any anxiety and confusion!

maybe it was that only 5 int'ls got a full ride?? i dunno

"maybe it was that only 5 int'ls got a full ride??"

this too is unlikely, i don't think they define a 'full ride', there is always some expected contribution from work study / family.

the average FA package for internationals is around $30,000.

hey guys i found another CC thread on this topic:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/international-students/473701-international-acceptance-rate.html

i guess it's a bit old, but in 2004, 102 int'ls on campus got aid that year, which means around 25 per grade.. but i bet the number increased a lot in the last 4 years!

anyways you should definitely apply for aid if you really need it!

nice thread, thanks

No, I dont NEED the money; my parents are willing to pay the money if they have to. But it's still a lot of money to us.. I'm sure I can get a lot of aid if I applied for FA(and got accepted).. If I got in without FA, I'd probably thinking "I should've applied with FA, I could've saved so much money".. so whether to apply for FA or not is a big decision to make..

Like Duygu, I'm an international student who got financial aid. I graduated in 2008, and when I applied, getting FA from Columbia was not common. However, it's becoming easier each year--Columbia's been heavily recruiting overseas, and one way to attract more internationals is by throwing money at them. So, 4 years ago I'd have told you, in spite of myself, not to bother applying with aid, but this year I'll tell you to go for it.

...I think I remember hearing whispers of Columbia going need-blind for internationals as well.

For your convenience, try looking into a school like Amherst College. Theres been a post some time ago that was featured on CC saying how Amherst extended their need-blind admission to internationals also.

"guess it's a bit old, but in 2004, 102 int'ls on campus got aid that year, which means around 25 per grade.. but i bet the number increased a lot in the last 4 years!"

the number is probably more like 120 today at least, I'm pretty sure 25 in 2004 was only of columbia college, seas would get another 10-15 ints on aid. that takes the number today to about 35-50 at columbia on aid. Considering that the internationals getting aid at columbia are top applicants they probably had similar offers from HYPS, I'd guess that the number admitted on aid packages is more like 70-100 in order get 40-50 marticulants. So top 70-100 international applicants isn't impossible but it probably does lower your chances a notch.

duygu...you should soap that unclean mouth of yours, cause it's dirty like unwashed underwear. We at least went down without much fuss. Now if you won, congrats! At least you could be a bit modest...or even better, look at the italians how they played the game, like gelous lovers torn apart by the others' infidelities. So, shut it.
Being accepted at Columbia doesn't really mean you have decent manners...8-|

dude, Im sorry. i didnt mean to offend you (or the other romanians) and i wasnt trying to be mean (at all). im sorry if my post struck you as mean-spirited and indecent.

Now that's much prettier... apologies accepted :D
