How hard is it for non-top 10% to get accept to UT-A if they are Texans?

How has the new law affect non-top 10% chances of admission? I will be in college Fall 2012 and it will top 8% automatically accepted. Is it a good or bad thing for people like me not in the top 10%.

The reason they went to top 8% instead of top 10% was to give the university more flexibility in accepting students who are not in the top 10%. So for those not in the top 10%, the change is a good thing.

That is good to know because I read some places where they say it is a bad thing.

i think because theres a lot of people who are in top 10 and the ones who are not are very limited and almost don’t get in because of space. Raising this to 8 percent will allow more room for the people who are not in 10 percent to get in. almost the same as what spdf said.

i was under the impression there wasn’t a set cutoff line for admissions. i thought they were able to limit their automatic acceptence to 75% of the incoming class regardless of top10% so they would start with top 1%, then top 2%, then 3% etc still they reach the 75% quota.

^^^ That is true, but they have to have a cutoff percentage because part of the rule is that they will tell you by September of your junior year what the cutoff will be for your class. So they do go top 1%, then top 2%, then 3% but they have to predict ahead of time what percentage will get them to 75% of the class.
