How hard is it for OOS students at first?

I have been accepted to UNC-CH from New York and was wondering how hard it is to adjust while there are so many in-staters and if I will have a hard time making friends with the locals or other out of staters. UNC is probably my first choice, but this is one of the only things holding me back from making my decision for sure. Please give me your insight on the issue as many people have said opposing things about the OOS experience, specifically for New Yorkers.

Everyone is in pretty much the same boat for the first few weeks. Even people from the same high school who end up rooming together will probably only know a couple of other people in the whole university. I give OOS students the same advice that I give IS students-be social, be friendly, and go out and meet people. You do that, and you’ll have no problem feeling right at home here.

Do not give it a second thought…honestly if you just show up for events during the first weeks of school and are friendly you’re going to meet a bunch of people who are feeling just like you.

My S is not the most outgoing person (certainly not when compared to my D) and chooses his friends a bit more carefully than some. All we heard (when we heard from him  ) during that time was about all the new friends he had made, where they were from etc…over the years at UNC he had a very large and very diverse circle of friends…most remain in regular contact and many get back to Chapel Hill fairly often for mini gatherings.

If you let that truly unfounded concern keep you from choosing UNC you will be making a terrible mistake.

Welcome to the Hill!

I’m (gasp!) going to have to agree with eadad on this one … it’s not really an issue. There are some high schools in NC that send dozens of people to UNCCH every year, but many/most instate students will only have one or two friends from their school at UNCCH.

It might be different if you’re an international student (I know people get tired of being treated as novelties or ‘diversity’ trophies), but domestic OOS students shouldn’t really worry about this.

Do I need to stand in a door frame or otherwise take shelter? …you know, the old “duck and tuck”
