How hard is it for out of state students?

Hello!

I’m a senior in high school from Illinois and I plan on applying to UW for biology in the next few days. However, I have no idea how easy or difficult it could be to get into UW as an out-of state student. Can someone chance me/explain how my chances could differ from in-state kids? I’m curious. Additionally, do I have any shot at a merit scholarship?

Finally, I’m still trying to find more information about the school in general. Is it possible/relatively easy to switch majors or double major between different colleges? (I am also interested in finance). Finally, does the weather in Seattle really have an impact on student life? I’ve heard a few stories concerning the gloomy weather and its negative impact on students who go to school in Washington. It may be false, but again, I’m curious

Often it is easier for OOS students to get into a public school because they like all that nice OOS tuition! However, there is not a lot of scholarship or FA money for OOS students. There is some, just not a lot.

Washington’s acceptance rate in 2016 was 63.7% for residents and 38.8% for nonresidents (45.3% overall). I have not seen final numbers for 2017 but expect they are similar.

The Seattle Times recently reported the average ACT scores of students admitted in 2017 were 29 for residents and 30 for OOS. Average SAT scores of students admitted were 1289 for residents, 1355 for OOS, and 1364 for international students.

According to UW’s 2016-2017 Common Data Set, the middle 50% ACT range of enrolled freshmen was 26-32. The average unweighted GPA of enrolled freshmen was 3.79.

You have an excellent academic record and might be offered a Purple and Gold Scholarship:

If interested, you might consider applying to the Honors Program.

Good luck!

Business school has a 30-50% acceptance rate
