from reading this board and just talking to ppl i understand that its very hard to get into unc oos, so i was feeling pretty good when i got accepted, but now i got waitlisted at carnegie...w.tf? i mean i understand carnegie's not a easy school to get into by any means, but i was under the impression that chapel hill oos was much harder to get into. was i just wrong or can someone else come up with some logical explanation of this

also anyone care to give a top 5 rank of the hardest publics to get into oos? i'm guessing berkley's no. 1, but i'm not sure after that

yeah this happened to me too..i got waitlisted at cornell. you cant really explain these types of things since different schools look for different things, and their criteria vary from year to year. so you may have been waitlisted this year, but if you applied with the same application NEXT year..who knows, they'll probably accept you. it all depends on what the school is looking for at the moment.

as for ranks..im guessing its like

berkeley (about 15-18%)

ucla (not sure but pretty dang low)

unc (about 18%)

virginia (around 30%)

michigan (about 40%)

not sure about ucla vs. unc..they could be flip flopped in terms of how difficult it is to get in OOS

hm well i got waitlisted at cornell too but thats not like a surprise, ivy league prestige aside cornell's still a much better school than cmu. getting waitlisted at cornell was, while not pleasing, a half-expected result. cmu tho, it wasnt quite a safety but pretty close to it on my list of schools... anyone else?

I think (again, this is just observation) that UNC really takes the essays and recommendations into account. I think they seem to be looking for more personality than just high test scores.

Other schools seem to just want the high test scores and good ECs, but don't view everything else as more important.

Did that make any sense? It did in my head I swear haha

lol made sense to me. idk tho my scores werent that bad they shoulda gotten me into cmu lol

yeah i still think its due to school's varying needs/wants year to year. to be honest..i think you should just go to unc and forget the rest =]

lol good call misstinax3. i will indeed go that route. mean words have already been exchanged with my friend whos going to duke

I've read in places that its just as competitive as Ivy League admissions for Out of State applicants!

Get used to it hinvestorp. ;) Last year, within five minutes of finding out about my d's acceptance, her Dook-accepted friend started belittling UNC....lol!

It's like it's some sort of automatic thing...

annnnd i just got rejected outright by stern...whats going on
