is it common for students in top 10% of the class to be rejected? i am right at the edge for top 10% but i have a slightly above average act score and decent ecs so should i be ok? my common app essay wasnt super great but my supplement were good.
I have long heard that because UNC-CH tries to promote geographic diversity within the state, it’s going to be much more competitive to get in as an in-state student if you are from the more populous urban counties than if you are from one of the more rural ones. E.G. a student with a 3.6 UW GPA and a 1350 SAT is a longshot if they are from Wake or Mecklenburg Counties, but are very likely admits if they are from Gates, Swain, Scotland, etc. Never seen any formal policy on that, but it is what I have heard for years.
Also been told by a guidance counselor that they want a minimum of 8 AP classes. Again, no idea if there is a formal policy on that, so TIFWIW.
That’s interesting because I read this article http://gazette.unc.edu/2013/01/08/study-finds-that-more-ap-classes-may-not-be-better/ . There are many schools that just can’t support that many AP offerings, so I don’t think it is a formal policy, and I know plenty of in state UNC admits that have fewer than 8 APs.
Very interesting! I wonder if the guidance counselor’s information was out of date? Thanks for posting that.
