Hey I wanted to know how hard it is to change majors at Cal Poly. I got into Cal Poly SLO and UCSB. My major at UCSB is economics and accounting while at cal poly its math. I want to change my major to to possibly business administration (my alternate major). How hard is it to change majors?

It depends on how close the two majors will be. I believe for the College of math and science, it says on their website where if you go talk with your advisor, you can actually start taking business classes instead of math classes.

[Changing Your Major - Advising Center College of Science and Mathematics - Cal Poly](http://www.calpoly.edu/~cosamac/major_change.html)

“Please research the requirements for the desired major through college advising websites or department websites and if it looks possible for you to complete the prerequisite requirements AND meet the gpa requirements within three quarters, you can make an appointment to see an advisor in the CSM Advising Center in Building 53, Room 219; 756-2615. We will establish a written contract that will allow you to bypass taking your major/support requirements for up to three quarters and will allow you time to take the courses needed to pursue the desired major.”

Well to change majors with the same college (for example switching from english to history in the college of liberal arts or from one type of engineering to another) it is slightly easier than switching to a major in a completely different college, which is what you would like to do. Honestly, I think Cal Poly wants to make you think it is near impossible to switch your major in order to discourage doing it since it can lead to it taking you longer to graduate and for there to be more impacted classes. However, if you are persistent and don’t mind going through a somewhat tedious process, it should be possible for you to switch. I don’t know how long it will take, but I think it can be done.

Yep, as stated, if you’re changing within the same college, it’s a lot less tedious then say changing from one college to a brand new college.

I’m guessing that going from math to business administration is within two different majors. Also, do note that you cannot change your major no matter what until after one quarter of school.

unless you’re tying to go to engineering or architecture it’s not that bad. They just make it sound very difficult to avoid people getting in ass easy majors and switching. I mean my tour guide switched majors 4 times, and the head of the school said 25% of kids change there major…because honestly most kids have a change of heart in the middle of college, its impossible for every single kid at a school to be happy with their major. Yes, the process is a little more difficult then at ucsb etc, but it’s perfectly doable, and worth the extra effort if this is your number 1 school. Also at open house they talked about making it easier next year by setting clearer guidelines for outlining the process/and possibly making it easier to try and avoid students falling behind and graduating after for years do to a major change. So in short, you shouldn’t be to worried. Just gotta keep your grades up.

isnt cal poly notorious for not letting people change majors?

no, let make it sound harder than it is. It is defiantly possible, just a little harder
