How hard is it to double major?

I'm in high school and plan on applying to the school. I want to double major in accounting and actuarial science. How hard is it to get into the business school? And how hard is it to double major in the two in 4 years? Can I double major in the two if I get into LAS, or can I only do it if I get into the business school?

The business college is the hardest college to get into with an acceptance rate of around 40%. You need high GPA (and class rank), high test score and then essays and ECs should be considered very important for entry into it. Even a 4.0 unweighted GPA and 36 ACT is no guarantee for admission to the business college.

If admitted to the business college, you can then attempt a second major in LAS such as acturial science. You would have to be admitted to that program for the second major junior year (but need to take any required freshman or sophomore courses before applying for the second major). If you are not admitted to the business college, it is impossible to have a second major in the business college because it accepts no double majors from the other UIUC colleges. As to difficulty in accomplishing a double major, it can be done but usually requires an extra year unless you come in with a lot of AP credits and you can often face course conflict issues, e.g., separate courses needed for each major that are prerequisites for future courses in each major may be offered only at the same times in a semester.

As to what usually happens – many arrive firmly believing they will double major and then come to their senses and decide otherwise.

Why is business college’s ACT score, SAT score, and high school class rank aren’t the highest then? It seems like it’s the second hardest.

Engineering has the highest rank/test score middle 50% ranges but also has the highest admission rate, over 70% (higher than LAS). That results from two factors: (a) it usually gets about 3400 applicants and admits close to 2450 to get about 1200 to enroll; (b) Those who apply for engineering mostly have those high stats and stats are more important than essays and ECs. On the other hand the Business College: (a) gets close to 3,000 applicants, admits about 1150, to enroll about 600 to 650; (b) high stats are no assurance of admission, essays and ECs are very important, and it has been known to reject those with very high class ranks and 36 ACTs while accepting candidates with impressive essays and ECs with much lower stats. In other words, middle 50% ranges are not necessarily determinative of the difficulty of admission.

I see. But I think it depends on the person though… If you have good test scores and well-rounded GPA but not good essays, Engineering would be easier. And if it’s vice versa, you may have better chance applying to the business college.
But in general, I still feel like it’s hard to say the business college is the hardest; because people with higher test scores are more likely to write better essays and have more ambitious ECs.

Thanks for the help. I probably won’t get in because my rank is so low (multiple kids get 2400 SATs every year at my school and I’m around the 40-50 percentile) so I probably won’t bother applying to the business school.

^you can transfer into the college of business for sophomore year. Get a good amount of leadership, pull off a good gpa…and you should be set. If you want a double major…hmm…I think you should at least transfer 20 credits from AP. (that’s around…4-5 AP classes with a 4 or above AP score) otherwise you will have a lot work load…
