Topic says it all. For a premed curriculum, how hard is it to get a GPA of around 3.8 or higher? Is is next to impossible? About what percentage of undergrads get grades like this?

Extremely difficult. Pre-med at Stanford is one of the hardest in the nation. I recall in my class, there were so many aspiring Pre-meds, myself included. However, throughout my four years, the number of Pre-meds in my class steadily declined since the courses were too rigorous and demanding; I guess you can say they were "weeded" out. Even though there aren't as many crazy curves here as in Cal, some of the classes are really overwhelming and competitive--some of these kids are really intense with their studying! I just graduated and I barely managed to pull off a 3.4, and I studied like crazy.

It's interesting because I think both here and in Cal, large percentages in the freshman classes hope to embark on the medical path. But they eventually find out that a lot of the classes are just way too demanding, so they change paths and choose an easier major. Moreover, their desire to become medical professionals decreases immensely since they are left disillusioned from the rigors of the initial phases of the medical path.

Personally, I think if you want to get a 3.8+ GPA in Pre-med, you should go to some other school other than Cal or Stanford. I'm not saying it's impossible. But it will be very very hard. Only a few can do that.

Premed is known for being extremely difficult at any school you go to. Stanford is no different. If you go in looking for a 3.8+, chances are you'll be sorely disappointed. What I have heard is that if you really want to keep your grades high, you may be advised to take some of your premed courses at a junior community college. I don't know how that looks like in medical school applications though.

But is it possible? obviously it would be hard, but has it been done before? do you know anyone in a science major with a high cum. GPA?

Of course it's been done before. It's been done at Cal too. Stop going around to all the different schools' boards and asking this same stupid question; at all the top universities, it is difficult to achieve and of course it's possible, just incredibly difficult.

Jesus.

^^couldn't have been put better tastyb33f...there is no such thing as maintaining grades in an "easy" fashion, if you aim high you have to pay the price
