How hard is it to get in as an Animal Science Major at SLO?

They have an animal science major with a specialization in equine science. That’s what I want to do. I would be a transfer student from Mt. San Antonio College in LA County and I’m taking their horse program right now. So I would be a transfer student My current GPA is 3.76, I have 6 years work experience in an animal hospital as well as volunteer experience. Problem is, I know they are picking people who live closer, which is a bummer. What are my chances of getting in. I would plan on going Fall 2012, not 2011.

Also, how can I improve my chances of getting in besides keeping my grades up? Do they even look at honors classes?

My daughter was admitted to the Animal Science program as a freshman last year. I understand it is one of the toughest majors to get admission to within the Colllege of Ag. I don’t know how it compares to other majors. In meeting with some faculty before she applied we learned that an SAT score of around 1350 was desired to get admission to that major (of course GPA, honor courses, etc also play a role). Also, this is a datapoint for admission as a freshman and I don’t know how relevant it is for a transfer. My suggestion is to call the college and ask what the standards for accepted transfers have been in the past.

Thanks for the info, Mariner116. Ya I heard it is competitive to get in as an animal science major, I just didn’t know how competitive. Congrats to your daughter for getting in! She must be so excited! Ya I think I’m going to visit the college soon to get more info and what my chances are. Thanks!
