How hard is it to get into UNC as an in-state student? About what would your SATs, GPA, extracurriculars have to be? Do they want SAT subject tests?

i heard that the in-state acceptance rate is about 50%. You have to have good SAT scores and gpa, but not necessarily ridiculously high. From my public high school last year in NC, we had 10 people accepted to UNC. Most of their SAT scores were from a 1800-1900, and their GPAs were around a 3.7.

Is that weighted or unweighted? Do you know if most people at UNC graduate in 4 years? Some state schools make it hard to get the credits you need to graduate.

the more you are resisting, the harder it is

The in-state acceptance rate is definitely not 50%.

If you’re doing well, in comparison to your class, you should be fine. UNC also loves athletes. For in-state they could really care less about SAT Subject Tests. We had 15 people get accepted last year from my school and as far as I can remember none of them had subject tests. Just really good GPA’s, class ranks, and solid extra-curriculars. You should be fine

Actually, the in-state acceptance rate is almost 50%. I think it was either 47% or 48%. I went on a tour and they told us that, and you can find it online as well. The 20%-or-so OOS acceptance rate skews the data towards about 30% overall.

^That makes sense. I remember looking at a small pamphlet that said the acceptance rate was 33% overall.

yes, so i was right, harambee. the IN STATE accpetance rate IS about 50%.

Yes LolyGAGHa you were right. I was just looking at figures that showed the overall acceptance rate, not the in-state acceptance rate.I still think in-state acceptance rate is lower than that considering the 20,000+ applications Chapel Hill gets on a yearly basis with thousands of them being in-state kids.

Do you have any specifics on class rank, GPA, SATs and extracurriculars?

My counselor had a sheet with info on Chapel Hill and other NC colleges. that she presented to the class of 08’ during the fall last year. This is what I remember from it:

-Average of 7 AP’s by senior year
-90% of the incoming class reported “significant” community service
-Average GPA was over 4.25

This is for in-state applicants BTW, and all NC public schools go on the 7-point weighting scale.

umm…i really don’t think those stats are right. a 4.25 gpa sounds too high. i go to a public high school in chapel hill, and we most definitely do not have a 7-point weighting scale.

My counselor gave me a sheet with info on it and I remember that. Also, that GPA was weighted.

Just curious, but LolyGAGHa, are you an NC resident?

yes, i am a nc resident. i live in chapel hill (2 minutes away from campus).

Awesome. I live 2 minutes away from UNCW.
So are you a Dukie or a Tar Heel? Where would you rather go?

i am most definitely a tar heel, and i would love love love to go there (i applied EA). I also applied to UNCW! where would you like to go?

That’s great, I hope you get in. If I had to stay in NC, I would probably want to go to Duke. I’m still a Junior and I haven’t visited either colleges yet, so that could change my impression. BUT, the best thing that could happen would be if I were selected as a Robertson Scholar, then I could go to Duke and Chapel Hill at the same time. That would be pretty awesome, getting the best of both worlds.
