I've heard that it is impossible to get in OOS. I'm a white female from NJ. I have a 4.1 weighted GPA (idk what it is unweighted) and I am somwhere in the top 15%-10% of my class.

My SAT I's are: 710 M, 700 CR, and 680 W
My SAT II's are: 610 US History (ouch...I know... but i got a 4 on the AP test), 670 Math 1, and 700 Math 2.

I also have a TON of cool extracurriculars. I have been playing tennis my whole life and have been on my high schools team every year. I am also going to get a great rec from my boss from when I was a summer intern at a high tech computer software company.

Does the fact that I am not a resident of VA disqualify me??????

Does it look like I am not very interested in UVA if I have not visited the school??? I would love to, but my dad thinks its too far away to drive down and see the school cuz I'm not going to get in anyway :(

my class ranking is skewed a lot because of how my school weights GPA. AP and honors classes are weighted the same. Since I challenged myself and took all AP and honors courses it was much harder for me to get a good GPA than it was for kids that have a higher rank than I do. The number 3 in our class only took one AP course the entire time she was in high school. For the most part, half the kids in the top 10% of our class were in honors and College prep courses, and the kids just below them were the AP and honors kids. Do you think colleges will recognize this loop hole????

Does your school weight honors classes? If so admissions people will make a note of that. Honors is nice but AP is harder. In Fairfax Va, schools don't rank for that reason. A person with a 4.0 (94-100)in college prep could beat a person with full IB diploma and a 3.9 gpa because all of the Pre IB (aka - honors/GT) stuff gets no weight. But adcoms know this stuff IMO.

I go to West Essex high school in essex county. Its supposedly a very good public school.
Our GPA weight system goes like this:
In General courses (below average courses) an A is worth 4.0
In College Prep courses (average courses) an A is worth 4.5
In Honors/AP courses an A is worth 5.0

So if i bust my ass in an AP course and get an A-/B+ average, its the same as getting an A in a cake College prep course, but my school still reports deciles.

Ive seen a lot of kids from Fairfax VA talking about how their GPA system is skewed. Is my schools system similar to the fairfax weight system?

a fellow essex county resident! i'd make a logically conclusion that you have a shot considering the towns that high school deals with. see what scores kids had who have gone to UVa from West Essex--I'm sure there are plenty of students who have attended. That should be your barometer.

NJ is one of the more well-represented states (excluding Virginia) in UVA. I think your chances are greater if you're from, say, California. Anyway, you should try and really work on your GPA (unweighted!) and your essays. Additionally, try hitting 700 for every section of your SAT to maximize your chances. Out-of-staters face the most competitive admissions process - equivalent to Ivy admissions.

Francoid: 1) Your school has a Naviance system...Check it out for UVA...It may be screwed up though, given that you must have kids with over 4.0 GPA's that have taken very few honors and AP classes (they would not have a chance at UVA)

2) College Prep A= 4.5 Are you kidding? No wonder why your Naviance has so many kids with high GPA's....Most schools A's in CP= 4.0 (1st school I have ever heard of that weighs CP classes)...

3) Class Rank sucks, but more so in your school.....Request that your rank be kept off your transcript...(it's not difficult, go to guidance and ask)

4) Even if you were in the top 8-10% at your high school, UVA OOS would probably be a reach, unless they love your school.......

What do you think my chances are OOS?
top 5% class rank, 750 Math, 680 CR, 710 Writing
700 Chem, 680 US History, 660 Math II
GPA around 3.7 UW and 4.35 W (all APs and Honors courses, toughest coarseload)
MA public school
EC's pretty good, nothing too fancy
Looking for an extra reach school, need to know if UVA is a realistic reach

Have you done anything outstanding? Or something that stands out from your application? I think this is especially crucial for those coming from OOS.

Hey
My avg is a 92.
The avg accpetd student from my school has a 90.1 avg?
I have a 31 act.
I am an OOS asian male who is low income and has faced abuse.
I have done substansial research.
Am a questbridge finalist?
what are my chances?

dont complain about your weighting system. at least you have it. my school doesnt even weight grades. I've taken 11 AP courses through my senior year but am just outside the top 50 out of 600 students.

My school didn't weight grades, but also didn't rank. I was around 5th percentile, 7 AP's, about a 2300 on the SAT's and had a 4.1 (if weighted) GPA. Also had a 2340 combined on 3 subject tests (Math level 2, U.S., and World history). I was waitlisted at UVA. I'm pretty sure UVA places a very heavy influence on GPA and class rank so unless they're really up there... and unless the SAT's improve... I'd say it's a big reach.
