How hard is it to get in?

I guess what I want to know on behalf of my daughter who would like to go to BU in a couple of years… if the admit rate is over 50% how hard is it actually to get in? I see some highly impressive stats posted on this board but just wonder if all that is necessary for admittance? No disrespect intended here. I’m just curious as to how much she has to knock herself out in order to be accepted??

It’s getting more and more competitive each year. Apparently this year, the average SAT score was a 1990 and GPA an A-.

getting in is the easy part. the real problem is getting enough money to go. if you’re rich enough to pay $30-40k per year after financial aid and merit aid, then it might be possible. otherwise, your best bet is to be either really poor (like 0 EFC) or really amazing academically/artistically/hockey. even though BU accepts a fairly high percentage, many many many students receive absolutely no aid (even those with susbtantial need) and are not even expected to consider attending.

It certainly seems to be much more competitive this year. Six kids from my daughter’s South Florida school applied. All were in the top 10% of the class with uw GPAs over 3.5, weighted over 4.25. Two were accepted, both to CAS. Three others applied to CAS and the other to engineering.

Unfortunately, what vicious dirt says is true. But if your student is one that BU really wants, they are quite generous with their merit awards.

Based off of the people who got in at my school, I’d say the average was a 3.7 gpa unweighted. SAT score ranges from 1770-2200 and the ACT was from 26-32. Honestly, it’s not incredibly difficult to get into BU. Just put a TON of emphasis on the essay portion because it can seriously make a difference. Ideally, just have 3.5+ gpa and 1800+ SAT and I’d say you’re solid.

I’m sure it doesn’t help that all ivy hopefuls use BU as a safety school. Must skew the results somewhat (?) But for a student who really wants to attend with a gpa in low to mid 90’s and possible SAT’s in 18/1900 range, do you think applying ED is an advantage? I realize you can’t compare finaid packages if you do that-- but let’s say that was beside the point.

you should have no trouble getting in ED with those stats.
