How hard is it to get into College of Charleston?

Current students ... if you don't mind me asking, what was your high school GPA and your SAT/ACT score? I am just trying to get a basis of comparison.

Answer from a parent of a current student....96%, 2030 SAT. Got in as an early admit...and LOVES it. Good luck to you!

The median GPA for students accepted from my ds' high school is 3.24 (unweighted) and the median SAT is 1220/1600.

fendrock: public or private? In-state or OOS? thank you......

Suburban public school outside Boston.

good to know....thank you.....

A classmate of my daughter's (small rural/suburban public high school in NYS) went to College of Charleston this fall. Based on what I've heard she was in the Top 20% of her graduating class and probably had a A- average and SAT scores in the 1150/1700 range. She did not take the most demanding curriculum offered at her high school (Advanced Regents Diploma, no APs).

Realtime--Would you mind sharing what your child (male or female??) loves about the school? Trying to get more insight on several of our choices--what made yours pick CofC? What other schools did he/she consider?

Also, realtime, what region of the country. This school is on my duaghter's radar, and we're from New England....

We are from PA. My D also considered JMU, UDel, Miami of Ohio, Wm & Mary, UVA, looked at Rice, Xavier, Ohio State...as you can see we had a pretty diverse list and no limit on geography. She did not want to go "where her entire HS would be". She was initially drawn to CofC for the urban in-city vibe, nearby beaches, warm weather. However, school size, campus visit, 1/3 oos students, raves about professors/staff and good matches for her potential majors/minors won her over. There are good things going on in terms of future development on campus but trying to maintain student population size, keeping class size/ratios/no TA's on the plus side too. Neat historical campus is beautiful! The drive down/back is a beast, but what a good excuse to visit this wonderful city! Not to end on a negative but her only complaint would be the lack of boys...about 66% female. Send your sons! ;-)

Realtime

The Citadel is just a few miles away. Lots of very polite guys!

I know a girl who went who had like 1000 on the SAT. It's not too difficult to get in.

college of charleston in my first choice. i live in MA but im becoming a resident of SC in may because my mom lives down there. my weighted gpa is a 3.2 and i got an 1150 on the SAT’s… what do you think my chances of getting in are?

RL2011, I would say you may be denied since the 3.2 is weighted and your SAT is below 1200.

Our high school sends a few students to C of C every year. From our Naviance - about 63% accepted - most apply in the EA round. Average SAT score of accepted students is 1174/1600. Average ACT score is 25. Average GPA is 86 on 100 point scale. So, it is a good fit for B/B+ students with average test scores. From what I hear, our students are happy there - no one has come back to us saying that they are interested in transferring.

My younger son is only in 10th grade - but it is on his list!

Rockvillemom–where are you from?

Live in Maryland.

I think that like all state schools w/good reps, it’s getting harder to get in every year. More and mroe poeple are turning to these schools as alternative to their own state schools and to more expensive private schools. So I think we’ll see them get more competitive, esp since some states are legally bound to limit the number of OOS accepted.

I was surprised when I got in, having applied so late (March I think?). My stats weren’t great either. My GPA was 2.92, I have very few (and scant) extracurriculars and didn’t stick with anything for all four years. The only things I really had going for me were my job experience, my national merit, my test scores, and my application essay. However, should I go there I’m going to turn it around and actually start putting more of an effort into my studies!

i mean i got an 1150 on just math and reading on the SAT’s. i got a 1650 on everything. i am also instate now. are my chances easier?
