how hard is it to get into college under "pre-med" majors

i know a lot of people who apply under Biology/Chemistry/etc majors who want to eventually go to med school. How bad is the competition? What do schools consider when weighing all the applicants? Thanks...any help is appreciated!

I think there are no "premed" major. Just a cluster of courses required by most med schools. The competition is more when you take the hard courses that are "weed-out" courses (especially if there is a curve). Also, more than half of applicants (and survivors of the premed grind, MCAT...) will be rejected from every single med school they apply to.

there are very, very few actual schools which will allow you to major (and thus receive a degree in) in "pre-med". In other words, if you want to graduate, you need an actual major.

and if you dont get in to med school what are you going to do w/ a pre-med major??

I think the OP is referring to stating their intended major on the college applications. They're concerned that writing that they intend to major in a field that typically sends a lot of students to medical school (ie. bio majors, chem majors) may hurt their chances of getting into any particular college.

I think that writing your intended major on your apps may have an effect on where you get admitted, but there's no way to be sure. I've heard here some people think it's best to write "undecided" to increase your chances of getting in, but others think it makes no difference. Regardless, it's really up to you.

If you don't get into med school, there are other options in using the "pre-med" major such as research or you can go on and wet your feet in medical related activities and always apply again the year after.

if you do a pre-med track but dont choose a real major not getting into med school will pretty much screw you!

what do you mean by a "real major"

pre-med is not offered as a major but rather serves as an outline of classes that will help to prepare you for medical school. if you only follow this track and don't earn a degree should you not get into medical school what kind of job can you get?

even if you do pre-med track thats only for the first 2 years....still have to get a major

i'm not saying don't do a pre-med track i'm just saying don't put everything into getting into med school wo/ having a back-up plan. any college advisor should tell you that.
