How Hard Is It To Get Into Cornell AEM?

I'm aware AEM is incredibly selective as it is a small program and many athletes/in-staters take up many of the limited spaces; however, is it still realistic?

I guess I'm deciding between Cornell AEM, UPenn CAS, and Northwestern Weinberg (CAS)...

AEM would be my first choice, but if acceptance is as impossible as per se Wharton then I'd rather not waste my ED.

Is AEM's ED acceptance rate any higher than its RD (anyone know what they are?).

Also... I've heard Cornell is all about "fit" so could an exceptional essay save me?

Background info:

White Male
33 Composite ACT (35 English; 35 Reading; 34 Math; 28 Science; 12 essay; 35 Writing)
SAT II: Math I 750
GPA: 3.67 UW :( (3.85 without Freshman Year) -- Competitive High School in Northeast OOS.

2 step-sisters currently at Cornell and legacy from my step-dad. (However Cornell rejected my biological brother last year (who had slightly lower stats than me) so the legacy surely isn't thaaaaaat impactive).

I have exceptional business-related ECs that also could be a saving grace (if my GPA isn't too detrimental).

Any point in applying cornell aem ED? Or would UPenn CAS/Northwestern Weinberg make more sense? Thanks :)

This is copied and pasted from the Cornell’s Dyson School website

Student Profile
Total AEM Majors 696
Incoming Freshmen, Fall 2012
No. of Freshmen 91
Admittance Rate 10%

ED is much easier. Approximately 1/3 to a half of the new class is admitted through ED.

This is unofficial, but apparently AEM’s acceptance rate dropped in the last admissions cycle to be closer to 7% including RD, and their freshman class size is still a little under 100. Interest in business is part of AEM’s holistic applicant review, so I would think that those ECs would help you. Cornell AEM is realistic in that you do have a chance ED, but it won’t be high. I can say though that if you want to be conservative Northwestern CAS ED would be easier than Cornell AEM ED or Penn CAS ED.

bhchamp> Could you elaborate a little more on your business-related ecs ? And make sure to reflect those qualities in your essay. Im personally writing about business in my cornell supplement essay and am having my school teacher with whom I started business write my letter of recomendation so im sure that my qualities will be well reflected.

Maybe you should give it a go too…

Do you have any hospitality experience? Hotel school is a business school focused on hospitality. They offer many business classes. My older kid (A&S) took finance courses at both AEM and Hotel. Unfortunately, you would not be able to apply to Hotel if you didn’t have any hospitality experience.

OP - I would ED at Cornell. You would have a better chance.

Getting into AEM would be tantamount to about corundum on Mohs scale of hardness. Maybe diamond, depending on the quality of the other applicants.

^ hard but not impossible. As I stated before, more than 1/3 of the class is admitted ED so if you want to get into AEM ED is the best time to apply.

@Hilariousimlolin where do these statisitics come from? Are you in the Dyson School right now? And does that 1/3 ED pool include all of the athletic recruits or are the recruits part of the regular decision pool?

Unpublished stats. No I graduated. Recruits are usually ED but depends.
