How hard is it to get into Cornell's college of ecology?

Obviously all areas of cornell are hard to get into, however how does the college of ecology compare, specifically the fashion design program? I will be applying next year and my extra curriculars are pretty good (varsity soccer, mock trial, DECA, Key Club, NHS, student gov, History fair nationals) and my gpa is 3.98 taking all AP classes and Graduating with an IB (international baccalaureate) diploma. HOWEVER, though I haven't taken the SAT yet I know that I am going to get incredibly average scores, probably around a 1800 because thats about what i got on the PSAT and on practice tests :(. So I am wondering what are my chances that my talent in fashion design will compensate for my lacking SAT scores? I have a pretty impressive portfolio and I design every piece (no using patterns and such). Thanks!

Your grades are excellent. Stop kicking yourself about your SAT score. For design programs, a good portfolio is much more important than ACT/SAT scores. Depending on the program, a design portfolio may even be much more important than your GPA. Since you are concerned though, why don’t you just pick up the phone and call the admissions counselors in the College of Human Ecology? They can probably give you an idea about your chances.

Wishing you much success!

I know the college of architecture there places substantial weight on portfolio, and it only makes sense that the College of Human Ecology would proceed similarly for a fashion design concentrator. Anyone who matriculates there must fulfill academic distribution requirements spanning other areas, so general academic capabilities cannot be ignored. But the extent to which SATs vs. GPA are weighed, relatively, by an admissions committee there I’ve no idea.

Oh, I forgot to say that most design students I know are so dyslexic that 1800 on the SAT would be impossible even though their classroom grades are good. If there is any chance that that is part of your problem, find out if you can get some accommodations (like extra time) on your SAT.
