I'm applying for Freshman in Deerfield, Exeter, and Andover. I was in swim team for three years with average standing but I changed to lacrosse in 8th grade because I couldn't afford to spend three hours every day (including Saturdays) swimming.

I went to district science fair in 6th grade, my school team (with me, of course) won first place in chapter round in MATHCOUNTS and went on to state round in 7th grade.

I can speak Korean fluently (English is obviously a given) and I'm still awaiting my SSAT score. The math parts were pretty easy and the reading comprehension part was okay/good. The vocab section, I had trouble with five problems but since I had eliminated at least couple choices for all of them, I guessed on all of them (I expect to get at least couple of the five right).

I was participant in Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth in 2009-2010 and I scored 2nd highest in my state in the math section of SCAT. I'm also part of GATE program (Gifted and Talented Education).

Also, I play violin (this is my fourth year). I made into district honors orchestra after playing for 2 months in fifth grade. I was part of district honors orchestra in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade (this years audition is yet to be held) and I was in All-Southern California honors orchestra in 7th grade as principle 2nd violin (2nd violin first chair) and I made in as 1st violin in 8th grade (the seating audition is yet to be held). I'm going to send in recording of two contrasting pieces to the schools (Lalo violin concerto and Bach Sonata #1).

I think I wrote the essays pretty decently (I'm still working on my Exeter essay though and I'm going to look over my Andover essay again).

My interviews went well (I still have to interview for Exeter, though) and the person who interviewed me for Andover said what I said in the interview will make a great admission essay so I guess I did pretty decent job in my interviews.

To those who were accepted into these schools, how good are my chances?

Oh, also, I have straight As in all the possible honors 8th graders can take (honors geometry, honors/GATE humanities which is basically history+english) and had 4.0 GPA my entire middle school. I’m part of my school orchestra.

you make me happy. pretty good chance.

Finally my interview was good, essays were good, but ssat were horrible 99 math 88 verbal 85 reading I am taking it again and seeing what happens.

@Exetercrazy-OMGOMGOMG!!! Wow-A 99M, 88V, 85R is GREAT on the SSAT not “horrible”. Good EC’s except for the fact that You are Asain (ORM). If You have a hook You might be able to get in, or if You had a special EC, but like a billion other applicants (And Exonians), You play the Piano and are “pro” at math. I do not mean to attack You but I would believe that Your chances are medium.

@exetercrazy, Your chances are good

Please chance me for andover and exeter
I’ve got straight A’s these years, I have lots of ECs, and most of them have lasted at least 5 years or so,e.g. table tennis ,Go, Chinese painting ,sketch, debate, swimming, journalism…I’ve tons of awards in all kinds of competitions ,in major subjects and EC activities. I’ve got great recs, all my teachers love me. The interviews went well( I took them in summer),In exeter I was interviewed by the Director of admissions , and he told my mom I had an awesome chance and she should be really proud of me, I could tell that he really like me, and the interviewer in Andover said almost the same thing, and we have kept in touch ever since. I have a special interest in politics, REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT IT. and I’ve got ECs and experiences relating to it, awards on that ,too. I did show that hook during the interview, I think they really liked it.And my essays are pretty great too ,I think , it presented myself well.Um,and I have sumitted my art work, I’ve learned them ever since I was 4, and they are really good. the only bad part I can think of is ssat,I only got a 64%, but I’m international though. toefl’s fair ,passed the minimum score but not like super good. And I’m a sian, specifically Chinese, please take that into account. But I’ve got a not chinese personality though…I’ve submitted the apps already.Do I stand a chance guys? THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE, DON’T BE AFRAID TO BREAK MY HEART!

oh, plus, I’m applying for sophomore year, no FA.

A 64 as a chinese could be a killer. I have friends from China whose consultants tell them not to try top schools without a 90 or above. Then again, students at andover have told me many kiids have gotten 60s and still been accepted, but to be honest i have only heard this happens to domestic applicants.

I know that. But most Chinese kids got super high ssats and screwed their interviews. and I heard that the standardized scores aren’t the most important part of the app. Besides, I think other parts of the application are all good though. I don’t go to international school or foreign language schools either. So, I hope my chances are fair … anyways, I 'm still counting on the interview, it’s the only part of the app that I know for sure is good. @ baseball25, R U applying to those BS this year or R U currently attending ?

plus , the admission teacher at deerfield said they understood that we weren’t good at the verbal and reading part. My Maths and reading were okay( 780, 710),though maths is super low for me given the fact that I scored 800 last time and got 3 800s in the practice tests. Just the 620 verbal was depressing… hope my ECs and other parts will make up for it.

@lhtlinda, I am applying to Deerfield, Hotchkiss, LV, Middlesex, and Choate. I got my info from @TrazCapDev, who had gone through the process as a Chinese applicant.

Alright, so basically with a 60s ur doomed. For exeter, your academic ability is everything. They take it seriously and without a good ssat score its nearly impossible to get in there. To be honest you have really impressive ecs and you seem like a really good person. But still I gotta say 5 out of 500 acpt ratio for chinese is how this game meant to play, even bosh was rej cuz exeter announced he’d be swiped out(IQ issue lol). He ended up going to andover. So if u have a good backgroundno (no offense) andover and da are pretty good options. So give up upon exeter and focus on the other 2 schools. Still, without a 90 ,or at least 80, the chance goes way down.

Not to be a debby downer, those schools all will be very, and I mean very. tough to get into as a Chinese applicant with a 64.

I know, but it’s no harm to give it a try
@ TrazCapDEV , I know how hard it is, but I don’t think it’s THAT negative though. plus, I think the acceptence rate was a bit higher than what you said. anyways, it’s too late to give up ,I’ve done all my parts, and asked my teachers for the recs. Just my point of view, if all the Chinese applicants have a great ssat score, how can just judge upon that ? I’ve got an email from Exter sending to all applicants telling them ssat is only a small part of the app, I believe my other parts r really good. And I’m guessing you heard this from ur consultant ? Maybe I’ll just get lucky and get in
there’s nothing I can do about it anyway. So R U currently attending one of those schools ? I don’t really agree with you about the importance of ssats, but MERCI BC
@baseball25 how was ur ssat ? ( if u have got ur score already )?

The arithmetic for admission into Exeter or Andover does not favor a 64 percentile SSAT score. Both schools have an Average SSAT score of 94. It would require 7 kids with 99 scores, or require 30 kids with a 95 score to balance out a 64, for the schools to maintain a 94 Average.

A candidate would have to bring an exceptional talent to the table, for those schools to be willing to “balance out” a score significantly below their Average.

THX. Point taken. I wouldn’t ve applied if the other parts R doomed . I just hope they can be special enough :)
