I applied earlier today, and I'm just curious about how difficult it is to get into the program.

You should be fine. I know people who applied and didn’t get in, but if that happens and you really want to do it you can talk to the professors in charge of the program and they will most likely let you in. I know a couple of people who got in like that, and haven’t heard of anyone doing that who didn’t get in afterwards (though maybe they just never mentioned it to anyone).

Also, i know some people didn’t really like perspectives on science, but I really did. While I wasn’t a big fan of the physics lectures (I am much more of a bio and chemistry person) I really liked being exposed to different fields and it makes it really easy to find a lab for the summer, which you can often keep working in during the school year. (though it’s still pretty easy to find a lab even without it, but it’s hard to get fellowship money to work in a lab the summer after freshmen year, which is why perspectives is good). Also, it is really nice socially to have a big, relaxed class with a lot of science freshmen and then know a ton of people during the summer if you decide to stay in new haven.

thanks so much for your response! I’m very interested in doing it, but I’m not sure how strong my application is. The application instructions were very vague, so I wasn’t sure how much to write for each question. I also only have AP scores for 2 sciences now. I’m waiting for my AP scores to come later in the summer for 5 more math/science tests, which I mentioned on my application.

anyone else know anything about PSE acceptances?

I didn’t get in when I applied last year. I was confused because I had some research experience and stuff, but I think they made the right choice not accepting me. I think they’re really looking for people who want to learn about a lot of different fields, rather than someone who’s only in it for the funding or who already knows what they like. I didn’t take it, but my friend didn’t really like it. I do think you’ll be fine though.

Also, don’t worry about funding for freshman summer or in the future. If you’re willing to look, you can find funding to do anything. There are so many funding opportunities at Yale, and if you talk to the right people, it’s only easier.

My son wound up dropping PSE. He feels it’s a great idea on paper that doesn’t work well in practice.

Through his Freshman Orgo prof, he had no trouble finding a fully funded research opportunity for the summer.

I agree with wjb about funded research at Yale. My soph and her friends are all very busy and are getting paid this summer, both on campus and off. No connection to PSE for any of them.

Yeah, i didn’t get into perspectives either, and i was pre-admitted to DS (???). i doubt it has to do with statistics… i had scores and grades as good as anyone else. And i had done science olympiad like crazy… but no research. I really have no idea how they evaluate people, but i thought i was as deserving as most and i didn’t get in.
