How hard is it to get into research?

I'm going through some existentially-natured, personal issues right now, and I'm starting to revise my long-term plan. How difficult would it be to go into research in psychology?

Is it basically a case of going to a good school and being the best in your class?

If you want to do research in psychology, you need to have a masters at minimum, and realistically you need a PhD. It’s hard to get into the research field in psychology with just a bachelors. It’s about a lot more than going to a good school and being the best in your class. It’s about understanding the material and demonstrating motivation and aptitude for it.

If you finish with a 4.0 in your major, but lacked significant undergrad research experience, you aren’t going to be as good of a candidate as the person who finished with a 3.8, but did 2-3 years of research experience with professors, along with a summer internship or two.
