i know about half get in... but how hard is it to get in?
what are some of the most important factors? (gpa, classes, extra activites?)
what are some stats of some people who have gotten in/rejected?

It's hard. You pretty much have to have a 3.6 GPA (harder to do in college than in h.s.), show leadership in college, and participate in community service. But GPA is the main thing - and I think they especially look at your grades in quantitative classes and the prerequisites.

It is certainly tough to get into Ross. Most successful applicants have GPAs over 3.4, which at Michigan is tough to maintain. As Snorky suggests, doing well in the pre-requisit classes (Calculus, Accounting, Macro and Micro) is key.

obviously it depends on who you ask. if you ask ppl that were accepted, then they will probably say that it's not that tough. on the other hand, if you ask those who were rejected, they might think otherwise. it's all a matter of perspective...

you can go online to look at the admission stats. most years, median gpa is 3.6. remember that this means that half get above 3.6, the other half below. too many people lose sight of that and then start to panic when they have a 3.4.

It is very hard to get accepted into Ross if you are male. They like to keep the male/female ratio 50/50, but 75% of the applicants to Ross are male. I know several people who had 3.8 with a's in the pre reqs, leadership activities, etc, who were rejected, so basically it's like applying to college all over again. For women, if you have a good gpa with good grades in the pre reqs, it should not be THAT hard, though it is still pretty competitive.

Being a woman and/or an URM will help you considerably. Hey, what else would you expect from UMich?

The white/asian/indian/mid-eastern males aren't the people getting in with less than a 3.6 - they need close to a 4.0.

So it is correct to assume that when I apply next year to Michigan, not being a woman/URM, that if I don't get preferred admission into Ross that my chances will be essentially nonexistant apply at the end of freshman year?

No, it just means you have to make damn sure you get A's in all your prereqs (not as hard as people think - I've taken most of them (never applied to b school though) and gotten the A's.

Just don't start having "too much fun" and let your grades slip.

edit: actually I don't know. If they're accepting so many by preferred admissions it may end up being even harder to be accepted as a JR applicant. Hmmm.

Does Ross look at HS records at all?

Ross does not look at HS records or SATs at all.

One thing I must make clear...it is not impossible to get into Ross. But students who want it must work hard for it. Ross is one of the top 3 undergraduate Business programs so you can be sure only the best will apply to it.
