Can you apply to a school that is easier to get into and then transfer into SCS later?

extremely hard, MIT competitive admissions pool/ percentages

Yes, you can try for an internal transfer if you get admitted. But if you have to backdoor your way into SCS then it might not be for you in the first place. Transferring in from ECE, Math, or Physics is decent but if you’re thinking of trying an HSS -> SCS lateral then your chances are slim. Either way you slice it, it’s not an easy shot.

Do they still look at high school when considering internal transfer admissions?

How to Apply for an Internal Transfer into the School of Computer Science

"Students may submit an internal transfer request no earlier than the end of the freshman year and once they have successfully completed 15-122, 15-150 and have a mid-semester grade in at least one 200-level core course (15-210, 213, 251). You will be evaluated based on your CS course grades, overall QPA, and availability of seats in the class you are applying for. Prior to submitting a transfer request, students should first make an appointment with our Assistant Dean, Mark Stehlik for an initial evaluation. "

How much easier would it be to get accepted into the College of Science?

MCS - cake walk if you had the stats for SCS.
Apply math and talk about computation physics or something along those lines with a goal to minor in CS.

If you’re female- done deal.

Talk about math in my personal statement?

Do your HW please.

No other comments necessary- do you know anything about MCS or just throwing it out there?

"but if you’re thinking of trying an HSS -> SCS lateral then your chances are slim. Either way you slice it, it’s not an easy shot. "
Untrue. Its easy. I know tons of people who transfer.

“Students may submit an internal transfer request”

What are you talking about? Nobody does this. They just talk to Mark Stehlik and he transfers you automatically if your grades in CS course are decent (as in, you can handle the work and aren’t going to fail out of CS).

"Do they still look at high school when considering internal transfer admissions? "
They look at nothing. They just transfer you if you ask.

@mom2012and14 What are you talking about? I asked that because you said:

When you ask
Can you apply to a school that is easier to get into and then transfer into SCS later?

Presumably you had something specific in mind.
You had an awareness of the majors in various CMU schools?
When I said write about math- that was addressing MCS-- why this made no sense was what my comment addressed.

Bottom line- admissions can read through intent - they’re not stupid.
The essay is factor is figuring out each applicant beyond the stats - which are a threshold for consideration. There are 7-8 applicants for every SCS spot there is – so why you ? That’s what you indicate in an essay.

Oh okay. I get it.
