How hard is it to get into the UCLA Design Media Arts program?

I am a Freshmen at Montclair State University in New Jersey and want to transfer schools. I am in the Animation and Illustration program now, but I am changing my major to Graphic Design. I want to transfer to UCLA, how hard would it be to be accepted into the Design Media Arts program? I have a 3.4 GPA now but I am going to work hard to get it up higher and work on a new portfolio.

It’s not easy.

The major itself is pretty small, and from what I heard they accept 30-40 students a year, but I’ve forgotten if this was just transfer students, or both freshmen, transfers, and change of majors. What I do know is that they place a lot of emphasis on the portfolio, so it’s good that you’re working on your GPA but make sure that your work is strong. The DESMA student advisor told me that when they go through your stuff they spend a couple of minutes on your portfolio and if they like it they’ll look at the rest of your application. And apparently they like more conceptual, creative thinking, so make sure that shines through your application. Good luck!

I just got accepted to this program as a freshman applicant (WHAT) and still in absolute shock. My GPA and ACT actually really weren’t very strong (and as an out of state definitely not up to standards), but apparently my portfolio was quite good. As jellymuffin said I would suggest building your portfolio (though you have plenty of time) and make sure to engage in extra curriculars that demonstrate your interest of design and art.

CONGRATULATIONS!

I am puzzled that you got accepted as a freshman applicant even though you have college units at Montclair State?

Sorry I misread. Congratulations @jjknowles‌!

UCLA Desma only looks at Portfolio. As long as you meet the minimum GPA, pass high school, and taken ACT/SAT, you are going no matter how bad your grades and other stuffs are. Strong, personal and unique Portfolio is vital.
