I've heard that it's pretty tough to get into most UGBA courses due to the priority given to Haas students. Does this apply to accounting classes beyond the two intro courses? I figured that not all business majors are concentrating in accounting, so maybe there's extra space for students outside of Haas.

It’s very possible, I’ve taken 120A, 120B, and 122 as a non-Haas student. Enrollment is determined by space in sections so put yourself on the wait list for the least popular section during Phase 1. You should be able to attend any section once you get into the class.

That’s good to hear. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to take classes for the CPA exam on a reliable basis.

Good luck!

I would also advise (if you have the resources and time) taking some of the advanced accounting courses during summer session because summer classes have open enrollment.

If you haven’t seen it already, this Haas accounting FAQ should be helpful for course planning:

Can anyone comment how difficult to manage 4 accounting and fiance courses in one semester after the completion of Econ 1 & 100A, UGBA 102A and UGBA 10:

102B management accounting, 3 units (regent Phase 2)
120A Inter accounting, 4 units (phase 1)
103 Finance, 4 units (phase 1)
196 personal finance, 2 units (Phase 1)

It should be fine, it is not a difficult to manage schedule, so you should still have time to hang/clubs/etc. The homework should not overwhelm you, and the reading will not as well, but you will have to memorize a lot for the classes and the fact that they are mostly technical, so you’re going to be doing a decent amount of practice problems/homework on a weekly basis (but there are solution manuals online if you look in the right places), depending on the professors, you may also have a couple of group projects

UGBA 102B and 120A are different topics in accounting so they don’t have really any overlaps. UGBA 120a is going to be more time consuming, but if you have Stanton he gives you the solutions to the homework so if you are lazy, just copy them, turn in the answers, and then cram for the midterms/final (I would recommend you still do the readings and look over the homework at least)…102B is just okay, not really hard, just annoying since there are random formulas you have to memorize

UGBA 103 is a lot of formulas and memorization, and the homework can be annoying…it is a useful class as well…I would say this class requires more effort and it is harder

UGBA 196 is a fun class with Selinger, just buy the book, and try to keep on top of your studying/reading, but he just goes off of the book. Go to lecture since it helps a lot and he is a really good lecturer. There wasn’t any homework when I was taking it, but I think he included end of chapter homework (do those in groups with friends to save time). The midterm/final are all T/F questions, but they are pretty specific if you are making it letter grade, you still need to memorize a lot…Good class for learning about managing your own money…definitely recommend going to lecture (not because you have to but because he is so funny)
