Due to financial/timing circumstances, I still do not have my license, and most likely won’t have one until sophomore year of college. However, I probably won’t be able to afford a car for a long time (my family’s income barely supports us owning a house and car, let alone another car). From you experience, will not having a car for a few years (maybe even ell throughout college) limit me?
@woah16. Well it’s been quite a while since I was at MSU (back when cars were just replacing horses) but it was not a problem for me, especially during my first two years in the dorms. You can get most anywhere via bike, bus, or shoe leather. And maybe cross-country skis and skates during the winter.
Seriously, it’s a big campus, so just be careful to allow enough time between classes by checking locations on a map while registering. Most everything off campus you want to go to is just north or in a few cases west. The campus bus system is good. If you get a bike, pay more for the lock than for the bike.
We are visiting October 12 with my youngest son, so I may get some updated information.
LOL
Students generally don’t “need” cars. I worked 35 miles away, so I needed a car. What would you need a car for?
There’s like nowhere to park in EL either for the most part, especially with the PACE gestapo handing out $35 parking tickets like candy these days. I have a car but it’s more just for the convenience of being able to go home periodically.
You’ll be fine without one.
@TheSpartan When I was at MSU, the campus lots for students with cars were a long way away. Is that still the case?
@Beaudreau yeah it’s based on which dorm you live in but they tend to be far.
Right, you don’t need a car there. You can take a bus to the mall, if you are a mall person. There used to be a ride board where people would post their need for a ride to their hometown or to Chicago or someplace else but I assume now it is online somewhere. You might need a car if you are student teaching.
No you shouldn’t need one but a bike is very handy to get around at MSU. Like someone above said, buy an expensive lock and a cheap bike. Think Huffy since MSU has a major bike theft problem. Almost everyone I know there has had a bike stolen, or the tire or seat of their bike. Go really cheap on the bike so they would have a hard time reselling it. My son’s Trek lasted a week before it was stolen so I bought him a used Huffy. No problems for the past year with the Huffy with a good lock.
