I've never taken an AP exam and I was wondering how hard it is to do well from using a prep book?
Also this year i'm taking honors chemistry (my school doesn't offer AP chemistry) would it be difficult for me to use a prep book and take the exam?

Chemistry's very easy if you develop an intuitive feel for the concepts. Otherwise, you might have to resort to rote memorization until that comes.

I self studied chemistry and it went quite well for me, and all I used was the textbook and one prep book and that was more than enough, just put in enough effort and you should do well.

Tonyt88,

How did you do even do the labs? The course entails you to have at least some experience in one of the 22-required labs. Did you somehow pulled it off without the help of a Chem teacher?

The test prep books outline lab-setting stuff that you need to know. Although doing it is better, I think.

how much work is it to self study something completely? What would be a good test to study for? This year i'm planning on taking 3 ap exams for my classes plus maybe chemistry, and i would like to do one independently. What about bio? is that hard?

how many would it be possible to do for the ap tests this year without making life miserable?

Oh I didn't do the labs, and when the lab question came up on the FRQ I just made up some reasonable stuff based on information I read on the prep book, though nonetheless lab questions I find to be pretty basic because they are usually based on common sense like don't touch your eyes while in the lab area or wearing goggles or something basic like that, so...

Wait do you mean how many can you self-study or how many can you do in one year, because I did five my senior year with a job [15/20 hrs/wk] multiple clubs [many w/ leadership] and doing my applications, so had I not had all of these extra add-ons I could have seen myself doing seven or perhaps even eight or nine [though I doubt I would ever have an interest in many of them], though I still think five is a nice number.

wow. how much time did that take? how did you budget your time

Ummm, well I would work on the weekends, usually all three days, then during school I would usually be doing clubs till about 5 ish [so fridays were crazy busy], and well I lumped doing my applications into two weeks so let's just say I was not a happy camper for that time period, but oh well. I guess I just made it work really though I guess it would help to know that I usually don't care to sleep much [usually five hours a night, don't know, I really don't need it]. But yeah, and the AP's well I don't know how I actually did well, I mean I wasn't very motivated to study but still managed fine grades [somehow], but yeah, what you have to do is just take things one at a time to do the best you can.

My track record for self-studied APs is bad. Don't turn out like me. Study before the day of the test.
