I want to start taking Spanish once I get to college (I took 3 years of french in high school, quitting right before I would have taken AP). How hard would it be to start? How much harder would 101 be than say a high school spanish class? Also, are there usually kids who have taken spanish before in 101 going for an easy A?

Rule of thumb is that a year of college foreign language is the equivalent of two years of high school foreign language. Some schools offer double-credit / intensive courses where one year is the equivalent of four years of high school classes. Expect that many of your classmates will have at least some Spanish background, even if the reason they’re in that intro class is because the college placement test put them there.

A lot of schools require a placement test for foreign language.

At my school, we have 109, 110, 121, and 122.

If you score a 0 on your placement test or you’ve never taken the language before, you take 109, then 110, then 122.

If you score at least a 1, then you get placed into 121 and then you take 122.

So, in essence, at my school, if you’ve never taken the language before, you spend 3 semesters in basic courses. Your first two semesters are with people who also have absolutely no experience with the language. If you have taken the language before, then you only spend 2 semesters in basic courses and your first semester is with people at a similar level.

Every school is different, though.

I’m taking German right now… and this is my first semester with it. I have an A, but I’m pretty good with languages. It is a LOT to learn. It’s made me appreciate my French skills way more than previously.

I took French throughout junior high and high school. I used it (very) occasionally over the years.

About 35 years later, I took Spanish lesson for one week. I could understand quite a bit and put together simple sentences on my own to hold a simple conversation before the end of the week. I think that French==>Spanish is very feasible. Spanish is a comparatively easy language.

Does anyone know how learning a new language is on the quarter system? Is one quarter equivalent to one semester, or is one year on the quarter system equivalent to one year on semesters?

It shouldn’t be too hard if you work hard at it in the beginning then it will slowly begin to make more sense. Scientists say that it takes about 72hours of concentrated learning to get down a new language so thats not too much. If you study for 2 hours a day for 36 days then you should begin to get acclimated toward learning it
