How hard is it to switch out of engineering?

I plan to be premed, and hesitate on majoring either biochem or chemical engineering. Because I know chemE is tough, I wanted to give it a try 1st yr, and see if I can handle it. I have a strong work ethic, and am pretty strong in science/math.

If I can't handle it w/ premed, I'll switch out to biochemistry, which I also really like. Is it a common thing to do?

How hard would it be to switch out?

Thanks so much.

totally depends on your school.

You don't really get into the chemical engineering courses until your 2nd or 3rd year, so first year might be easy, but the rest might be really tough. I wouldn't be surprised if first year chemE and first year biochem are the same.

It's a lot easier to switch out of engineering than switch in due to engineering typically having more pre-reqs and less freedom with course choice than other majors.
