I'm extremely interested in Neuroscience. I hope to become a neurosurgeon some day although I guess that could change, who knows - and I want to maybe major in Neuro during college. However, I've heard that it's extremely hard.

How hard is it to maintain a high GPA with this major? How hard are curves?
What are the classes like?

^^same here, I’d be interested in anyone’s input as well. After a campus tour at Duke, I spoke with one of the neuroscience professors and with the neuroscience program coordinator, and it seemed like an excellent program, but I have no clue as to the difficulty…

While Annoyingirl may have a point, choosing a medical specialty is so far down the road that you will likely change your mind. Heck, choosing a medical school is far enough down the road and you can major in anything and get accepted. Thus, I would choose a major based on your current interests and not worry if it perfectly aligns with a career choice that you may or may not make 8+ years from now. If you are interested in neuroscience, it will prepare you well and challenge you academically. Neuroscience is somewhat new as a program at Duke as it used to be under the scope of the psychology and biology departments, although certainly the courses haven’t changed all that much.

I knew a couple of individuals who concentrated in neurosicence and while it was challenging, I wouldn’t say it was more difficult than other hard sciences like bio, chem, and physics - probably a bit easier if anything. You’ll have to work hard in certain courses, but I got the feeling it varied widely from course to course and individual to individual. If you are smart and dedicated and want to be a neurosurgeon, you should be able to do well in the neuroscience courses at Duke - of course, it will require work, but that’s to be expected. People in the program do seem to really like it based on my impressions - a lot of really cool interesting research going on. Hope that helps. Good luck!
