is it comparable to not being in the top 8% and/or being OOS to UT- Austin?
I've read that it's almost hit the ivy league level..is that true??

I think the acceptance rate last year for OOS was around 24%. Make of that what you will.

Fratboy…OOS admissions is very competitive, but unlike UT, it’s fair. UT guarantees admission to ANYONE in the top 8% regardless of test scores, coursework, etc. There are kids at rigorous privates and very challenging publics who fall outside of that top 8% who have 2200+ on their SAT’s, 4.0 UW, etc. who are passed over for kids from larger, inner-city publics with oftentimes EXTREMELY inferior stats. Fair? No. UT itself has been opposed to the top 10% (now 8%) rule because so many of the students simply aren’t equipped to handle it when they get there. The mandate comes from the state in effort to ensure diversity. Although our D was in the top 8% and could have gone, UT was simply too big and did not appeal to her.

UVa DOES look at OOS kids’ scores, ECs, GPAs, courseloads, high school itself, etc. I also had heard the acceptance rate for OOS was between 22-24% last year; however, I believe a lot more kids apply from NY, PA, etc. so it might be more competitive for certain states. If you’re interested in the school, you should apply (nothing ventured – nothing gained). D loves most everything and feels she made a good choice.

thank you i feel the exact same way! i visited UT but didn’t like it because of it’s size etc…

does UVA weigh the gpa over scores more? and is it less competitive from texas since less people apply there? i’m applying and hoping to finish my essays soon! i’ve never visited virginia but feel like i would like it? i’m visiting every school i’m considering before i go though!

what is the in state acceptance rate? and what is your daughter studying there?

I don’t think they break down the state-by-state acceptance rates. There are quite a few southerners at UVa, though. The alumni groups are INCREDIBLE! D has been invited to several things specifically for OOS kids from our area. The school really does make an effort to reach out to the OOS kids, IMO. Flights can be tricky. People make it sound like flying out of Richmond or DC is SO easy – without a car, I don’t think it is. D flies in and out of CVille. The one thing we’ve learned is that students should definitely avoid late afternoon flights. D had a flight delay out of CVille which caused her to miss her connection in Charlotte and get stuck there overnight.

I believe they look at “the whole package”, so they’re going to give weight to your GPA, test scores, and ECs. Again, if UVa appeals to you, apply! (You only have 10 days left though! )

southerners, as in TX? haha what is IMO? (sorry i’m new to this) i’ve already got my transcript and scores sent, and i paid the fee, I just need to finish those supplements!! any advice on what to write about??? thanks!

should i apply to wake forest and use the test-option method?

There are only two groups in the admission process: Virginia residents and non-Virginia residents. There would be no point in calculating an admit rate by state. The state in which you reside is not a factor if you are a non-Virginia resident.

Remember, UVA uses a holistic approach. This means if your application is poor in one section, it will not ruin you if other parts of your application are great!

thanks guys! i finished my essays today and now just editing/proofreading them. i hope the adcoms like them! here’s hoping for good news come april! (:

If you are an “unhooked” OOS, with less than super high stats, you have little chance of getting in. Even OOS valedictorians (with ivy acceptances) face rejection from UVA.

^isn’t that a little extreme, man. I hope so, cause your words are crushing my dreams…

are you serious?! how do you know that? that’s reallly crushing my dreams haha

My experience mirrors that of bluemath. My children attend a top private school in the midwest. The average accepted GPA and SAT to UVA from their school is 4.07 and 2230 which makes it about as hard to get an OOS acceptance to UVA as it is to get accepted to Penn.

Averge at my old school is a 33 ACT and 95.9 GPA. No one from my current hs has gotten in.

Glad I live in Virginia :)

At D’s prep school, the average stats are similar to sclark14: Those who have gotten in recently have had around 4.2/2230+/10-11 APs. However, there was an applicant who was admitted a few years ago who had a 3.8 and 2150.

Should have never left Springfield, VA

haha. Oh well, it could be worse. Apparently, UNC OOS is even tougher than UVa

One might think because UNC has fewer OOS kids; however, the acceptance rates for OOS applicants are comparable.

as another data point, looking at my D’s HS Naviance scattergrams (Md private, regular OOS feeder to UVa, years 2005 to 2010), the bar apprears a bit lower…2140 avg SAT, 92.4 avg weighted GPA. A handful of athletic recruits in those averages, but acceptance seems fairly certain (almost all green) for those with >90/91 wGPA and >2170 SAT or so…which, I’ll add, ends up being a much lower hurdle than the Ivies for this HS.
